So DD was running 'round bottomless the other evening. I was trying to get her to sit on her potty which was in the livingroom so she can watch the TV and for general ease of access. I was sitting next to the potty, and she came up to me and said "poopy?!" in a whiney-type voice and I thought "great! she has to go" so I put her on the potty and she refused and ran off. She ran right back, and looked back and pointed at the floor, and yup - it was right there, on the floor - and in the hall. Luckily it wasn't mushed.

I was kind of shocked because she literally just ran back and forth w/o stopping and definitely w/o squatting. I honestly didn't think it was possible to poop on the run like this, lol. It *could* be that she went right before and I just didn't see it (our rug is dark and multi-colored) but still, no noticeable stopping.

Anyway - does this mean she isn't ready for PTing to #2? I thought they sort of had to develop the desire to go sit/squat somewhere instead of letting it just fly out? I'm sort of scared to do bottomless time much now that I know this may be a result. I'm used to scrubbing cat puke and various urine out of carpets but I can't say I'm willing to add mushed-in carpet poop to my tasks.

  • Oh, man. I'm not looking forward to that.

  • When I went to pick it up, DD watched and told me I was doing a good job, lol, and I was telling her that its not supposed to be on the floor - not trying to shame here, which is easy for her to feel right now, just explaining, so I'm hoping it was still a teaching moment.

I think I'm most concerned about how much of a warning she is supposed to feel at this point before she just goes. Right now it seems like its about 1-3 seconds.

Learning to poop on the potty sucks.  We had my son in underwear and pants. When we first started training, if we noticed him going, we would run to the bathroom.  Usually, he still pooped his pants, and we would kind of pretend to cry and tell him that pooping in his pants makes us sad, then we'd sit him on the potty anyway.  That may sound jacked up, but at that time that was the way to get his attention that we didn't want him pooping his pants  (we didn't make a huge deal about it, but we wanted him to know it wasn't cool).

After we put him on the potty, the other thing that helped was describing what to do (i.e. can you give a really big toot?).  Once he got the idea of that, it was an easier transition of pooping on the potty.  When we were first training, we made him try to squeeze/toot at least once before he got off the potty, every time he used the bathroom. Shortly after he stopped pooping in his pants.   Also, lots of good rewards for pooping in the potty worked great.
