radio intercom system thru house?
deciding on this (building house at moment)
my friend had one of these and i loved it....music through the whole house if we wanted. trying to convince my husband
he's concerned that if it breaks it'll be a fortune to fix...
anyone have one, should i go for it or not have you had any problems with it?
Re: radio intercom system thru house?
You do get some loss over long distances of cable (read quality goes down the further you are from the station) but realistically its not that much more to fix than any other electrical issue that might arise. You have speaker and electrical cable ran through the wall to a box similar as you would internet, cable, electric, phone, etc.
FI's mom's last house (she moves a lot) had one and it was really nice because she could call down to the basement to let him know dinner was ready, no more yelling through the house.

We don't plan to do it in our new build. DH and I listen to completely different music so I just imagine him trying to harass me by randoming playing his music at various times to irritate me, haha.
Also, I do a lot of work from home in the evenings and on the weekends (I know, my life is really exciting) and I need complete silence to work, so the idea of entire-house music isn't really appealing to me. The only reason I would consider doing it is to have the speakers outdoors and play music while we were hanging out on the deck or having people over, but I decided we could just go play music through a laptop, iPod speaker, etc.
As for your DH's concern, basically anything that breaks in a house is a fortune to fix. My parents live in a 40-year-old house with an intercom system that broke sometime before they purchased the house a few years ago. I'm sure the technology has improved over the past 40 years, but even if yours were to break, you could always decline to fix it if you discovered that you weren't using it much or if you didn't want to spend the money on it at the time.
We recently built a house and opted out of the intercom plan at the last min. and now I regret it. I do not lose sleep over it or anything-- but if you have a big house it is a real pain to be yelling up and down the stairs to find one another.
Everything will break, it is the joy of owning a home.......such is life.
