Wwyd? Re hardwood /carpet

Our main floor has hardwood throug out, except for the living room. Size is about 200 sqft

Our living room carpet is just trashed. It is light in color, has stains, and is frayed at the edges where it meets the hardwood.

We would like to replace the carpeting with hardwood. I assume we'd need to refinish the entire main floor to get it to match. With little kids, refinishing is something we hadnt planned to do until they are older.

Wwyd? We can replace with another carpet now to get us through, we can live with what we have for another few years, or we can bite the bullet and do everything now.

Re: Wwyd? Re hardwood /carpet

  • If you want hardwoods, see if there is a refinisher that uses the Bona method. It's a water based poly. You can walk on it in socks the day it's put on. It takes a couple coats. I had it done and I did not have to move out of the house.  It was done each day by the time I got home from work (by 3:00).  I also let the dogs on it at night.  No damage.

I had them strip all the floors in the house, sand, and stain to match the new wood.  All the dust was pumped to a container in my driveway.  No dust in my house.  It was very convenient.

  • When we moved in 3 yrs ago our home had hardwood (3 in. red oak w/clear coat) in the kitchen and family room. 2 yrs. ago we added hardwood in the dining room and powder room and also used the bona clear coat PP mentioned.  The company was able to match our existing floors and we did not have the existing floors refinished. The old floors were about 5 yrs old and could have used a little sprucing but they are okay.

The dining room comes right up to the kitchen floors and they made a smooth transition and cannot see a difference.

We have a 6yr and 4 yr old and were home during the install. We would go out after they applied the clear coat and then that night (a few hours later) we were able to walk on the floors with socks.
