Well, Sh!tballs!

DH splurged and got me a gorgeous road bike for my birthday. I have been so excited to really start training for tris, and so I had grand visions of taking it out for a great ride tomorrow morning.

I decided to take it around the block tonight to practice clipping in/out, as I was sure it would be different than in spin class (lol). Within 5 minutes I fell twice & bled through my socks & jacket. Now I'm sitting on the couch popping ibuprofen & sulking about how lame I am. My ankle is so sore I may not even be able to run tomorrow. Aaaugh!!

  • Next time try a grassy area or field. How is the tension set? It should be pretty easy to get your feet in and out of the pedals quickly. Feel better!

Thats great advice, thank you. I actually asked them to loosen it during my fitting, but it was still (obviously) kind of tough for me. I smacked my ankle into the side of the pedal, which left me with quite the gash. Ouch! I feel like I'm more mentally scarred than anything though, dang it.

  • I'm sorry that sucks! Feel better and hope you're out there again soon!

  • Joenali has good advice about trying it in a grassy field. If you have a stationary trainer, try practice clipping in and out on it a few times before going outside. Your pedal tension or cleats may need to be adjusted.

What kind of bike did you get?

Yes, thanks. I'm going to practice a bit more, and then maybe go in for an adjustment.

  • lots and lots and lots of practice.  I clipped in for the first time in years and promptly fell over.  Then promptly gave thanks I was in the grass!

    It does get easier though!

  • Ouch!

ETA: Yay for the new bike though.
