marathon training

Has anyone used Galloway?

I've used Runners World's rookie and smart coach  before (2007 and 2008) and have run about 8 semi-trained halfs since then (my PR in 2008 was 1:52; my last half was 2:11...).  My marathon PR is 4:22. I'm doing 10-15 miles a week right now and starting to think about ramping up for marathon training but I'm really torn on programs. I don't really want to be running 5 days/week, and am semi-entertaining upping my crossfit from 2 to 4 days/week and doing Galloway, but I'm so torn.

Re: marathon training

  • I run with a galloway group and have done many halfs and five marathons (PR of 5:01) using the program.  I usually run my weekly runs without walk breaks but do the long runs using a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio.  I like it and it keeps me injury free.  I know a lot of people don't like the idea of walk breaks but it works for me.
  • Even when I was training more (30mpw+ for about a year) and marathon training (both of which are a lot for me), I did walk breaks every mile or 2, including in races.

I'm less concerned with that than the mileage structure of Galloway's plans.

  • If you are looking for a plan that just has fewer days of running, check out the book "marathon method" by tom holland.

I've used his plans to train for 1 full marathon and 4 halfs and i'm a huge fan of it because it allows me time to do other types of exercise besides just running.

The thought of stopping and having to start again during a marathon sounds terrible to me.... so i've never tried Galloway.

  • If you want to focus on cross training and don't want to run five days a week, check out the FIRST plan.  It's in a book that's well worth the read called "Run Less, Run Faster" and you can find a slightly different plan in an article that Runner's World did a few years ago.  Link here

This is the plan I used to train for my full and two subsequent halfs.  I felt well prepared (used the Intermediate Plan) and liked that I only had to run 4 days a week.

This is what I was going to suggest, too. 3 days of running per week gives me enough time to do the cross-training that I want to do, which allows me to work out with the husband. I did a "traditional" training plan for my first marathon and really wanted to do another, but the time commitment is a real problem. I used FIRST for my second marathon last fall and will run my third, also using FIRST, in a few weeks.
