Do your parents/ILs...

have a key to your place?[Poll]

Re: Do your parents/ILs...

  • I voted for "no, but we'll give them one."  But I probably should have voted "special snowflake."  We give my parents a key to our apartment if we're going out of town so they can go check on it for us and bring in our mail, etc.  Other than that, we really don't want DH's parents to have a key and are kinda "whatever" about my parents having one.

  • I picked SS because my FIL has a key that he's only ever used if he was asked to do something while we were OOT.

My parents do not have one however my sister, brother and SIL all have keys.  We also keep one in the garage and have a garage code that a few ppl (including my p's) know.  These people will use the key/garage code to let our dogs out on occasion or stay at our house with our dogs if we are OOT.

  • My MIL has one since she lives only .5 mile from us. This is nice if we need her to run over and let the dog out or if one of us gets locked out.

My mom has a key as well - mainly for emergencies. I think the only time she used it was when we were on our honeymoon to water our plants.

  • I did SS:

My FIL has a key, and has used it a couple of times, usually dropping things off when we weren't in town.

My parents have a key, as well as the garage code (especially since my dad is the one I call when if we need someone to walk the dog in a pinch.)

My MIL will probably never have a key, even if she does move back to the east coast...

Though all of this is all fine and good, except we rarely lock our front door...

  • I picked Special Snowflake.

Nobody has a key to our door.
We lock it regularly, but they key stays in the door Stick out tongue

Yay country living. We lock the door because it doesn't close all the way.

  • No, because they aren't close by. We'd give them one if we needed to.

I have the keys to my mom's though.

  • We live about in the middle between my parents and my MIL (MIL may be a little bit more north but she works in the same city my parents live). We live across the street from a Home Depot so I told both families if they want a key, they can go make a copy themselves whenever they want. My dad did it the first (or second?) day we moved in. MIL hasn't done it, and I don't think she will.

(FIL lives out of state and I don't like him. I will never trust him with anything.)

Oh, and even though my Dad has a key I don't think he's ever used it or will ever it. Just for emergencies.

  • We both have keys to their houses but they don't have one to ours. We'll never give them one either. Its our house, our privacy.

  • SS here.

I live with my mom for the time being, so... But when I had a place she didn't have a key, but I would have given her one if she needed/I was OOT/etc. She's not the type to stop by or anything and would only use it in an emergency or under certain circumstances so I'd have no prob at all giving her one.

  • My MIL doesn't even come into our apartment unless we beg her to. LOL!!
  • I said no and we don't plan to give them one. We live on different sides of the country, it would be completely useless. I'm unsure if I would give them one if they lived nearby.

  • Both sets of parents have one, but they live 8 and 6 hours away, so they can't just drop by whenever they please. We gave them each one in case they are ever coming into town and get to our house before we would be able to meet them there... e.g. if they get into town at 4 and we can't get off work until 5, and then they don't have to drive around or wait in the car for an hour!
  • I voted my parents do, but my inlaws don't.

My parents own our condo and we pay them rent. They use the key to petsit when we're out of town, or to meet like a plumber or someone while we're at work.

They would NEVER go over just because. We always have a warning ahead of time.

  • My parents have one but only use it to check on things when we are out of town.  We leave bout an hour (50 miles) from them so it is too far for them to just come and go as they please.  Which is the only reason they have a key, I refuse to give one to my ILs.
"You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness."
  • My parents do (I don't have in-laws).  Right now mom is the landlord for my house.  I live in the States and my house is back home in Canada. So my parents have a key and handle all of the landlord tenant stuff.

Before I moved, my parents and a close family friend had keys.  Mom rarely went over, even though it's only a few blocks from my parents' place. If she did go over, she always asked/called before hand. Once or twice she stopped by without asking, but that was mostly to drop stuff off.

Family friend stopped by once week without asking. She owns a catering company and liked to drop off leftover food in my fridge if she was in the neighbourhood. Sometimes she'd even do the dishes if they were in the sink. I was ok with her stopping by unannounced, her food is devine!!!
