The Broc Just Read Hunger Games Post.

I really liked it, for the most part.

However, the part that'll make imoan hate me is that I found the verb tense throughout really, really distracting.  It took me a bit to get into it, and I occasionally got taken out of the story (especially when they were in the cave), because it almost read like a d&d game... "I reach into my bag of holding and take out my sword," instead of "I reached into my bag and took out my sword."

Am I high/alone here?

I'm dying because I play D&D with my friends every weekend and yeah, I can see where you get that vibe.  "I search the pile of trash in the corner of the room."  "Roll a d20 for loot."

Honestly though, I didn't notice it when I was reading them.

You are safe (this time), broc.  I didn't even really notice that and I can see how if you DID notice it, it would be distracting.

    You may pass.

  • When I was 'starting out' as a writer (read: writing bad sailor moon fanfiction in high school), MS Office Grammar Check always tried to dissuade me from using passive verbs, and the tense came out all weird and PRESENT! as a result, so maybe that's why.

Also, to add to our movie convo from earlier imoan, I've seen the previews for the HG movies, and saw that Stanley Tucci was in the preview, so in my head, Cinna was totally Stanley Tucci.  And now that I've read it and re-watched a preview, Cinna is clearly Lenny Kravitz, and now my mind is BLOWN.

That is the one thing that makes me VERY glad I read all 3 books before they started casting the movie.  And Stanley Tucci as Cinna is making me LMFAO.  Although the character Stanley Tucci played in The Devil Wears Prada was kind of Cinna-eque (minus the gentleness).

Stanley Tucci really could've played any of the male characters in the book except for Peeta and Gale.  IDK why I 'picked' him to be Cinna.

  • I saw Stanley Tucci once! I was walking around in downtown Chicago and he was chilling by the Watertower looking all awesome and well-dressed. I rushed home to tell everyone of my brush with fame, and at least 75% of people were like "who?"

I think you need to make different friends.

  • Is he the one you shouted at awkwardly, Smock?

  • Also, this belongs right here.

  • Hmm, I'm not sure I've shouted awkwardly at many people. I sort of waved at Mario Batali once, and David Cross shouted awkwardly at ME once.

The Stanley Tucci thing was a few years back, and for most people once I mentioned Devil Wears Prada they knew who I was talking about.

I want the awkward shouting David Cross story.

And I'm still thinking about all the ways in which I would do Seneca Crane.

  • The David Cross story happened back in the summer of '99, before he was super famous, but still a little famous. That summer I worked in a theatre being awesome, and I was standing around with a bunch of other theatre people outside of the theatre waiting for the guy with the key so we could get inside.

This was in an awesome alley, near a very famous location in the PNW (see, I'm being mysterious). David Cross was there with a photographer taking a photo for an article about him. We were just standing around not paying attention to him, but no one else was in the alley and I guess we were annoying him. David Cross started yelling at us like, "F?ck off, kids, go hang out somewhere else and stop f?cking up my awesome fancy photo shoot."

We were like "Whatever, your glasses look stupid. And we don't give a *** about your photo shoot." Except we didn't say that, we just rolled our eyes while he cursed a little more about how he was super awesome.

  • I find that really distracting too. I like the idea of the immediacy it gives the story, that Katniss could die any moment, she is not thinking back on this story and telling it from sometime in the future.  But the reality is that it's distracting, at least for me, which takes away from the immediacy of the story.

Smock- it breaks my heart that David Cross is a dovcher.  I love Tobias Funke!

  • I wouldn't conclude that he's an ass just from this story. I thought it was pretty funny that he told us to f?ck off. We were just stupid teenagers who were like "We're in the THEATRE, man, we're on your side!" I probably would have told us to f?ck off too.
