Scopes trial part deux in TN...

A bill protecting school districts when students pray or speak freely about their faith passed unanimously in the Senate Education Committee Wednesday morning.

The legislation would require school boards to adopt policies that would establish a ?limited public forum? where students could speak freely about topics including religion without discrimination. It also would require a student's faith-based work to be treated identically as another's secular answers.

After a lengthy floor debate when the bill passed a House committee Tuesday, the legislation moved to the full Senate smoothly after amendments were added delaying the bill's enforcement date to the 2013-14 school year.

Despite supporting the bill, some legislators expressed concern about the bill's potential application with other, less common beliefs.

?When we start really putting a stamp on some issues that are very complex in regards to the expression and establishment of religion, we have a difficult balance to obtain here,? said Sen. Andy Berke, D-Chattanooga

No discrimination, as long as you only talk about the Jesus religion.

  • It also would require a student's faith-based work to be treated identically as another's secular answers.

I don't even understand how this would work. It seems to have rather nutty applications even outside of the sciences.

Lets say I ask for causes of the decline of the Roman Empire and someone writes "Because they were pagan heathen orgy-lovers and God wiped them off the face of the earth because of their sins, according to my faith." I have to treat that like a serious answer?

Well, since they prevent mosques from being built, I'm pretty sure Muslim kids know how to stfu.

I provided other examples in another thread of how this could go down.

Health: Explain the female menstrual cycle.  Punishment of Eve

Home ec: Sew this piece of linen with a nylon thread. Abomination!

Physics: Magnets, how do they effing work?

    Math: 1+1+1=1

    Biology: Goddidit

    Geology: Goddidit

    Astronomy: Goddidit

Kid gets caught with alcohol.  I swear it was water when I poured it in my nalgene.  It's a miracle!  Jesus turned it into wine again!

I kind of want to dress up as a sixteen year old muslim and enroll in a Tenessee school to see. Not least because i can finally get an A in calculus by answering that f of x2*4xyz+5 is seven because my religion says it is so.

  • I feel like your SD could have some real fun with this law.
