Pella - Worth the extra $$$?

We need a new storm door and I scheduled an appt with Pella for a home visit/estimate.  They salesman says that we won't meet their minimum dollar requirement with just the storm door and I'd need to commit to changing out our front door too.  This is not our forever home.  In fact, it's looking like we'll only be there another 2-3 years.

I'd like to replace our front door but it's not really necessary.

I have an estimate from another contractor for a Larsen screen in door that seems fine.  They're not my favorite doors but they're in keeping with our neighborhood standards.

So should I stick with the Larsen door or is Pella really worth the extra money?

Re: Pella - Worth the extra $$$?

  • Not if you're only going to stay there a couple of years.
  • For a 2 year house?  No, I wouldn't spend the money on Pella.  You'd never get it back.  A few googled articles say the return on windows & doors is 65-80%, so you'll already be taking a 20-35% loss, I wouldn't add to it by paying extra for Pella.
  • No not for a short term house like that.  My question to you is do you even have to replace the door?  Could you repaint it and get a new screen door?  Even cheaper but will still help your resale value slightly.
  • Why can't you just buy a single Pella storm door at Lowe's?
  • Pella is definitely worth the $$$, however, I do not like the fact that they won't take your business unless you spend more.  minimum dollar requirement my ass!  Since you don't plan on staying there, I would go with the other contractor you found.

No, we really don't have to replace the door.  I wanted to since it is solid wood and doesn't have a window but it is absolutely a want and not a need.  I repainted it but since it is solid wood, the wood is doing this breathing thing and venting back through my paint job causing bubbling.  I'm sure there must be fix for it that is cheaper than a new door.

I think we're just going to go with the Larsen door.  I was so put off by the Pella guys attitude - like he couldn't even be bothered to come out for an estimate unless I promised to meet his minimum.  And the silly thing is I forgot about some old windows we have on the back of our house that need to be replaced so I probably would have met his minimum if he'd just come and done a little walk around.

  • Sounds like a good plan.  A window is definitely a plus.  I thought you were replacing it with the same style.

Mhh replacing windows gets you even less of a resale value.  Don't spend any more money than you have to for such a short term house.

This. It's where our Pella doors are from.

Didn't mean to ignore this question.  Looked at them and they don't have the option we want - a screen in storm door - where you slide just a part of the storm door glass down to reveal the screen.

And thanks for this advice.  I'm going to contact a realtor to get their opinion on what we should do in terms of any changes  (I want to paint the kitchen cabinets and install a half bath) but my feeling is that I want to put every penny into the new house fund even if we have to bring money to closing on this house.

Painting the cabinets, I'll do myself and it'll make me happy in the interim.  And after the last stomach bug my H and I both had - well, we really need more than one bathroom (sorry for the TMI).  ;)

this is what we are doing too. it was $35 bucks to do the measurement and we just have to go and pick out the door when we get a chance.
