toe nail problem and a question :(

I just got back from the podiatrist, and I may need to have my big toe nail removed! I have an infection in the nail bed which has been bothering me for the last few months. I am starting antibiotics tonight, then a round of a 30 day treatment if the symptoms persist... then I have another appointment to evaluate whether or not the nail should be removed. Apparently after removing the nail they can put antibiotics directly on the affected area.

I am soo disgusted, scared, and most of all - totally freaking out that my racing plans are in jeopardy!! I have a 1/2 in June and a full in October that I'm planning on (with a few races peppered in between).

Has anyone had a nail removed? How long was your recovery time before you could get back to running/exercising?

Thanks!

Re: toe nail problem and a question :(

  • I don't have much experience, but wanted to say that I'm sorry - it sounds terrible. Can I ask what your symptoms were? I have three or four black nails at the moment (under the polish) & mine are from too small shoes. I'm assuming they will either fall of our heal on their own. . .
  • I lost a nail due to wearing shoes that were too tight. However, I have a friend who had all of her toe nails removed due to something similar. The thought sounds horrible and I have no clue how she went through with having it done, but she's fine with it now. You can a rough skin over it and it doesn't hurt afte awhile.

    Good luck!

  • The skin around my nail (on all sides) is swollen and tender. I've known it wasn't an ingrown toenail but had no idea what else it could be! And the nail stopped growing as well, which really freaked me out but the doctor I saw today didn't seem too surprised. BUT I just got a new job this evening and now I won't have insurance when I was supposed to go back to have the toe reevaluated! So I'm stressed now that the medicine won't work and I'll have to wait two more months to get nail removed (when my benefits kick in).

I think you are probably right about your nails, but I personally haven't experienced that myself.
