House Search Vent

Some realtors really need to get a clue. I just looked at a house online. The realtor wrote that it's "Like a model home." Yes, if that model home was in 1990.

Also, how are standard, five-year-old appliances and cheap cabinets a cook's dream?

Re: House Search Vent

  • The realtor who sold us our house called the kitchen the "apple of the home's eye".. because there was crappy apple tiles on the wall.

I will never understand pun usage in real estate listings.

  • I agree that some realtor comments are way off, but I guess it's perspective.  We were looking at mostly 1900-1950's houses, so a 1990 house with builder grade cabinets and 5 year old appliances (compared to 20+, which I think our dishwasher is) might seem "like a model home."

That would have made me laugh. I love terrible puns, but they have their place. A real estate listing isn't one of them.

When I hear model home, I think of a specific home in a new development to show possible layouts. I think that's what this realtor was going for. I suppose I should just think of it as "model home-ish."

Also, the house was clean and tidy, but hardly impressive.

  • I love the realtors who use lots of exclamation points and over-the-top adjectives to describe a house.  Tons of windows!!! Fabulous outdoor space!!! Impeccable details!!! :gag:
  • I love it when realtors don't attach a picture and then say it has "lots of personality." That was always our cue to avoid, avoid, AVOID!

I'm not saying quirky fun houses with personality are bad. When that description is combined with no picture....then yeah.

  • My favorite is "pack your bags and move right in!"
  • I love "needs tlc" which can mean anything!

  • There's a realtor in our area who ends every listing with "if you lived here, you'd be home now."  Which makes absolutely ZERO sense in that context.

My other personal favorite phrase is "indoor laundry room".  I know what they MEAN (the laundry room is not in the garage) but there has to be a better way to phrase it to make it sound less like there are homes around here with the laundry setup in the driveway.

  • We ran into the same issues here along with very deceptive pictures that made a house look nice but after the showing we felt like we needed a spray down with a lysol can. There was one house my agent tried to get us to see that said "Your dream house is now a reality". From the pictures alone I told her that if that was my dream house I would happily rent forever. It had a tile countertop and all kinds of crazy outdated stuff!
