Crazy how quick you lose it!

I ran two half marathons in three months and had been running longer distances for about 6 months prior to training. My last half was Feb 12 and I took off running until this week, I was just burned out. Yesterday I was panting like crazy at a mile and today I was excited to make is to two! It's insane how quickly I lost all of that stamina!!

Even more confirmation that I need to stop screwing around and get back to it!

Re: Crazy how quick you lose it!

  • Really?  I'm newish to running, and I'm facing down the heat of the Texas summer.  I only have about a 5K base, at the moment, but I'm worried about how often I'll be able to run this summer and thought I might focus on strength training vs. running for a while.  Were you otherwise staying active while you were on your running hiatus?  Do you feel like it was your legs that "lost it" or more your overall cardiovascular endurance?

I've worked too hard to put my progress in reverse right now.  I don't know that I'll mind if I don't build more distance or speed over the summer, but I don't want to lose what I have.

  • I think it's just cardio for me. My legs does really "lose" it but I feel like I am huffing and puffing way harder than is warranted! I think if you keep your cardio you should be fine. It just always surprises me when I stop running where I end up.

I agree with OP's last post.  i think it's cardio related.   i had to take 6 weeks off from running dueto an injury but i was still able to do elliptical and other cardio activities.  Bcause i kept those up i was able to ease back into running without much problem.  it took about two weeks for me to get back to normal speed/distance. i think part of it taking that long was me being overly cautious to not reinjure myself.
