Defrosting Cake

I took all of your advise and froze my cakes that I'll be decorating with fondant tomorrow, Friday. When should I take those out of the freezer? I wont be decorating them until Friday evening. They are wrapped in plastic wrap and then in Ziploc bags. I can't remember if I am supposed to unwrap them immediately, or wait. TIA!

Re: Defrosting Cake

  • Leave them wrapped until they thaw.

Don't let them thaw too much. Its much better to work with a very very cold cake. Less crumbs when torting and filling and crumb coating.

  • haha on me - when I first read the title to your post, I thought "Why would she want the frosting off?!!!"
  • I take them straight out of the freezer, unwrap them and start filling and frosting. There is no need to wait for the cake to thaw before working on it. It's actually much easier to frost a frozen cake, plus it helps lock in the moisture.

  • Thanks! I just really want the cake to taste good since I'm doing fondant for the first time which I'm not a fan of taste wise. It's weird not really needing to worry about a crumb coat for once though :)
  • If you are planning on torting your cake or scoring your cake please let it thaw a bit. Just enough so that you can cut it. Trust me.. a knife on a frozen solid cake can slip and end up slicing your hand!

  • Thanks for the heads up! I'd like to keep this an injury free occasion :) For that very reason I'm not using my mandolin aka the thing I love to slice my fingers with
