built in benches?

anyone do this? i am thinking of doing this in our sunroom. do you mind me asking how much did it cost around? we have a contractor coming next week to give us an estimate to have our basement finished, i think i will ask if he does this too.thx!

Re: built in benches?

  • We did built in planters/benches/tables/chaise lounge/rolling coffee table on the patio at our last house. Because it was outside we built everything out of pressure-treated lumber, and probably spent about $1000 on supplies. It took three or four solid weekends with three people working on it to complete. I designed it, and my husband and a friend assembled it while I did the cuts.

  • Can I make a suggestion we didn't do but I wish we had? We put two large box windows in our sunroom, and the sills are bench-size, but window-frame-height. If we had only put in taller windows with a lower sill we would have had perfect window benches. Every time I look at those windows I kick myself for not thinking of this until it was too late. (One window is a typical two windows side-by-side-size, but the larger window is nearly 10 feet long. The sills are easily 24" deep. The construction is definitely sufficient to hold a couple of people.
