XP: Amazon Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet?

My bday is in a few weeks and BF wants me to make a list of what I want. Thinking about asking for either a Amazon Kindle Fire or the Nook Tablet. I know I want color screen, ability to surf the web, read books (duh!), etc. so I narrowed it down to those models. But which one between the two? Is there much difference?

  • Kindle Fire. I just got one and love it!

Why did you pick the Fire over the Nook? Thanks!

  • My husband actually surprised me with it a few weeks ago. I like it's because it's color, you can read and watch movies and tv shows, you can fb, and search the web. It's easy to manevuer and learn - that is my opinion. I don't know much about the nook.

  • The Kindle Fire is the obvious winner for one main reason: Amazon. It's questionable whether B&N will even be around another three years. Amazon is here to stay and the Fire will only improve.
  • I chose Kindle Fire -- actually, I waited over a year hoping that Amazon would put something like it out.  If they hadn't come out with a color tablet by now, my choice would have been an iPad but using the Kindle app.  When Amazon announced the Kindle Fire and I got to play with it in Best Buy, I knew they delivered exactly what I wanted.

The main reason I specifically choose Kindle over Nook, is that Amazon's Kindle Store is infinitely easier to use than B&N's.  I can always find what I'm looking for, and get relevant search returns when I was just browsing for particular topics.  I hate the B&N store.  I never get good search results and it bothers me to no end.  I also find more free and/or inexpensive books on the Kindle than for Nook.

The second reason I chose Kindle over Nook is that I like the user interface/software more.  I had and used both apps on my iPod, but I just preferred the Kindle app to the Nook app, despite their similarities.  YMMV though, so try them out if you can.

Kindle customer service is another reason to choose Kindle over Nook.

Really, I can't see you going wrong with either.  So much depends on personal preference, but I've listed my specific Kindle over Nook opinions.

  • I went with Nook Color (tablet hadn't come out yet when I got mine May 2011). Main reason I chose Nook was because you could rent library books. From what I understand now, Kindle Fire can rent library books also.

B&N customer service is great also. If it's important to you, you can discuss face to face with B&N reps at the store. (like PP said you never know if they'll be around in the future, but it's likely they will - we'll have to have some physical store option at least for the next 25 years!). With technology too, I don't expect to have this same nook color for more than 3-5 years.

  • Love my kindle fire, it is small enough to fit in my purse, and take everywhere, which a nook is as well

I order from amazon a lot, and having that tied in is nice, and being a prime member (like $80/ yr) lets you rent 1 book a month for free (certain titles), watch some movies and other things

nook, you can go to B & N with any problems and have them look at it right away, vs calling amazon and talking to them, sending it in...not sure if they have something like a prime membership

you can share books through nook w/ other nook readers, not sure if you can do that with the kindle yet....tho kindle does have a nook app (through a 3rd party)

i have seen reviews and they are about the same, just little things that differ from each

you can go to target/best buy or wherever and look at the kindle, and B&N to see which one you like better if you want to physically see it before you get one

Good luck figuring it out if you haven't already

  • I have read on a few sources that B&N might be ditching the Nook due to low sales. Something to keep in mind.

This is exactly why I went with the Kindle Fire. I'm in love with mine!

  • First of all, the B&N is NOT ditching the Nook. Last year, they set a record with the Nook for highest number of tablet devices sold other than the iPad.

Anyway, my DH and I were this debate the other day. He wanted to get me a Kindle Fire for my birthday, but I wanted a Nook Tablet because I'm a Barnes&Noble girl. So I did some research on the Nook Tablet and in the end, this video is what finally convinced my DH to go with the Nook Tablet 8gb --

     http://www.5min.com/Video/Barnes-and-Noble-Nook-Tablet-Review-517247247

The video is from, like, last December, but what G4 still stands and I feel that the argument that Kindle has more apps now falls flat, seeing as the Nook now has around 400-thousand apps available for sale and they're adding new ones every week.

I just got my Nook Tablet 8gb (it was about $50 than the Nook Tablet 16gb) and the only complaint I have is that I've only had it for two days and the screen is already covered in finger prints -- DEFINITELY invest in a screen protector. I especially love the Lendme feature on the Nook, which allows you trade and lend out Lendable books to your Nook friends.

Either way, though, if I had to choose all over, it would be the Nook every time.

    Hope this helps! :-)
