Pain and bleeding during/after sex

My husband and I got married about three weeks ago, and our wedding night was our first time having intercourse.

I had been expecting some pain and a little bleeding for the first time, and that's what I got, but I was excited about doing it again. Unfortunately, instead of getting better, it's gotten worse and worse. The first time was actually the least painful, and every time we have sex I bleed. It's actually a pretty startling amount of blood, not just a little spotting. It's really making it difficult for me to want to have sex, needless to say.

I'm planning to see a doctor about it once my addition to my husband's insurance plan gets processed, but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for me in the meantime. I really want to have sex with my husband without pain or having to clean up what looks like murder scene afterward.

Re: Pain and bleeding during/after sex

  • Get a full exam.

I am guessing you may have an intact hymen. A doc can take care of that with in-office surgery.

Make sure he rules out other issues.

If you can't a fford a doc right now, try Planned Parenthood or an ob-gyn clinic at a teaching hospital.
  • Definitely see a doctor. You should not be bleeding that much. And while I completely understand wanting to have sex, maybe take it easy for awhile. I had a lot of trouble, too, and ended up developing a mild case of vaginismus (I could still use tampons, but I could not even come close to having sex). Take it easy, do a lot of foreplay, and have him finger you. If you've never done that last one before, it can be really weird at first, but it helps A LOT. It helps you get comfortable with having something down there that isn't painful, preventing or relieving vaginismus, and it can help stretch you out without tearing if (like me) you have a very sturdy hymen and a small vagina.

  • I have actually had this problem and when I went to the doctor, it ended up just being that I had blood vessels that were fairly close to the surface, and when there was any kind of friction, those blood vessels wound become engorged and I would bleed, A LOT.  I felt embarrassed and it bothered me that it would happen.  The doctor told me it was nothing major, but that if it was bothering me he could slightly cauterize the blood vessels and it would help.  I agreed to have it done and it took about 5 minutes in the office with very minimal discomfort.  Since then I have no bled at all, and it has been a godsend.
  • I had a similar problem for a while - but it actually started after my husband and I had been having sex for a while (like, several years). It would bleed so severely sometimes I considered going to the ER. It got bad. And it would hurt.

I had a full exam done and it turned out I had some "skin tags" on my cervix that were getting irritated with all the friction and would bleed. Using plenty of lube helped, and eventually it just went away. Now we're good, even without lube. I agree with the PPs that the first step is visiting your doctor.
