Afraid to let go of my trainer

I started working out 3 times a week in Januray. All my lifting has been with a personal trainer. I bought a package deal and now I only have 4 more sessions left with him. it's a very expensive gym ($77 a session for PT) and even though I splurged the first time I simply don't have the money to renew my package.

A part of me also feels that I should be able to workout on my own now that I know the basics of lifting. However my biggest fear is that I won't push myself as hard as my trainer does and I wont be as motivated to go in.

Any tips that I can use to push myself hard at the gym to lift heavy? I'm such a wuss and I'm afraid of pain. But no pain no gain right?

Thanks!

Re: Afraid to let go of my trainer

  • Would your DH lift with you or maybe a friend? I run on my own but only lift with DH. He helps motivate me to push myself and I feel safer with a spotter since I know someone can help if I need it. A phrase that motivates me when I want to stop because it hurts is "the only person you cheat by cheating is yourself." No pain no gain suck it up and then your be so proud of yourself that you completed something challenging!

  • I 2nd finding a friend to lift with.  This will help keep you accountable and push you.

  • My trainer was getting too expensive too, so I decided to start cross-fit. Would that, or a similar type of group personal training work well? I know my trainer also does discounted partner or group sessions.
  • I would probably work harder with a trainer, but I still work hard enough on my own to see results. For me, it's good enough.

I'm motivated by "completeness" though; I love checking off a workout as done and logging it in my Excel spreadsheet. Embarrassed I like to see the weights I use go up over the course of several workouts.
