it sounds weird, I know. Here's the situation, my daughter said she liked butterflies & flowers so I did some (in my opinion) really cute decals of butterflies flying up & over her bed and a 3 ft tall "garden" on the opposite wall. Now she is requesting jungle animals. Um. I have a wall where I wanted to hang a few coordinating prints so I figured I'd try to find some jungle animal prints that could tie in the pink & green of the butterflies & garden. They only ones I can find are either primary type bolder colors or too babyish, like for a nursery and she'll be 3 this summer, I'd like to keep the decor the same for a year or two if I can!
I thought about framing photos then- my mom went to Africa a couple years ago and has some really cool animal shots. But I'm still stuck on the color issue. I debated just getting white frames for them to add a little femininity, as she has a book bin & decorative shelf in white (may still do this), but then I thought about maybe decorating the mat in the frame in pink & green to tie those colors into that 3rd wall...is that totally weird? I actually ordered a bunch of large polka dot decals to add just a little color around the top of her windows & door (those are the 2 undecorated walls in the room) but haven't put them up yet b/c I'm not sure how to arrange them and I thought, what if I cut them up & stuck them on a mat somehow to make the mat pink & green, with a black & white photo.... and then either a white or an espresso (to match furniture) frame.
Weird? Not weird? Are mats ever anything but solid?
Re: can mats (for frames) be multicolored?
Mats are usually a solid color so that the picture is the focus, not the mat.
It sounds like you already have a lot going on in that room....I would keep the framed pieces more simple.
I really don't think it would be necessary to do that. You do have a lot going on in the room, and I'm not sure you really need to add more pattern and contrast.
But if you insist on doing it, you can put patterned scrapbook paper over a mat in the frame.
LOL. If I "insist"? I was just asking about it. Strange use of words.
I am with you guys. What about a pink mat to pull the pink in?
I think that would be a good way to pull in the pink, as long as it works with the photos.
That is why I was thinking of doing black & white. Eh well I guess I can just see how it goes, I just wish I could find mats for cheap, Hobby Lobby wanted $10.
I agree with pp. I do think pink mats or green mats (depending on how many pictures you're framing you could do some pink & some green) would look pretty, but I think patterned mats might make the walls a bit busy. I also think you could tie in the colors by altering the saturation/tint in the black & white photos.
Sort of like this (obviously not the same subject matter or color, but the effect I'm talking about):
Hmmm! off to play w/ iphoto! I was also thinking sepia to make them a little more muted than b/w
lol. I was just coming back to recommend playing with the color of the photos.
OK so I only have iphoto for editing...I tried to alter the tint but it never really gets to pink (like that photo is blue), it tends more toward purple. I tried messing w/ temperature as well but that isn't doing it. Any ideas about which settings? I also tried it with the photo set to black & white thinking maybe that would do it but nothing changes when it is in B&W....
Sorry! I'm no help at all with that. Before my mac I had a microsoft editing program that was super easy to change colors and things like that, but I have't taken the time to learn what I have now. I'm going to do need to do it myself pretty soon, but that won't help you, sorry! Hopefully someone else on here is smart and can provide tips (that I can use too).
Sorry. Insist wasn't the best word, and I didn't mean it to come off as rude as it now sounds.
