Toy Suggestions

We have a 9 month old Golden Retriever. He has gone through so many toys. Everyone kept telling us to invest into a Kong toy. He had a kong style toy made for puppies when he was younger but thats been gone for months. We decided to give it a try. We bought him the Beast Rope Chew. It lasted a whole 20 mins. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I was looking on the Kong website & was reading a bunch of comments about how dogs detroy the toys really fast (wish I read before the purchase). Anyways, on there somebody recommended Goughnuts. I searched them & they offer a lifetime gaurantee. They are more expensive than a Kong. I just dont know if its worth it. I know there is a gaurantee but you have to pay $5 everytime if you need a new one. Has anyone tried these?

Re: Toy Suggestions

  • I've heard good things about Goughnuts (though I've never owned one - see my two non-power chewers in my siggy), but I'm also wondering if you've tried getting him a "classic" Kong like this (I linked the black ones, which are for stronger chewers than the red ones).  Those are the only Kongs we have in our house (other than the Wobbler mentioned below) - I stuff them (with applesauce, banana, veggies, PB, cottage cheese, whatever) then freeze them so they last longer.

I'm also a huge fan of Nylabones, and I know many people with strong chewers who like them as well.  Make sure you get the "durable" kind, though - even my pugs can destroy the "flexible" kind in under 30 minutes.

I really like treat-dispensing toys as well - they give a great mental work-out (probably key for a 9 month old Golden!).  There are lots out there (tug-a-jug, Kong wobbler, Buster cube, etc.), so you sometimes have to try a couple to see which one is the best match (my guys hated the Buster cube because it was so loud on the wood floors).  GL!

  • The ILs have a pit, and he loves the Kong Wubba.  He probably destroys one every few months, but he seriously loves it.  He even sleeps with it.
