Great comment about War on Women

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/29/opinion/collins-more-guns-fewer-hoodies.html?_r=1&comments#permid=8

This appears in the comments section of the article:

Why do lawmakers make it harder and harder to get an abortion, even in the cases where the mother will die, but easier and easier to get a gun? Do they only care about a life before it is born?

Why don't gun buyers have to follow the same rules women are forced to follow? Wait 48 hours after applying. View on ultrasound of a body with a bullet in it. Listen to the heartbeat of someone as they die of a gunshot wound. Get a lecture from a surgeon on what it is like to operate on a gunshot wound. After all that, if a person still wants a gun, he or she can buy one. Why should buying a gun be any easier than having an abortion?

  • I would also go for politicians having to do all of the things they propose before an abortion takes place, but with looking at what happens to people with no insurance.  Let's look at the size of that tumor that grew because the person couldn't afford regular checkups that would have caught it sooner.  Let them have to listen to the doctor tell how a life could have been saved with preventative health care and intervention at an early stage of disease.

What?  This analogy doesn't make sense.

As recognized by Roe v. Wade and its progeny, women have a constitutional right to obtain an abortion.  As recognized by the Second Amendment and relevant jurisprudence, citizens have a constitutional right to bear arms.  Therefore, the original comparison makes some sense.

No constitutional right to health insurance has ever been recognized, so this analogy falls short.

And I say this as dirty commie who wants a single-payer system.

  • Gun ownership is protected by the constitution and there are qualifications for legal gun ownership.

I don't get banning guns, it is the mis use of guns that is the problem.  Just as with alcohol.  Banning alcohol is not the solution fo the mis use of alcohol and drunk driving causing the numerous deaths of innocent people.

Apparently you're having a problem with reading comprehension today.  No one said anything about banning guns, they said they should have to jump through as many hoops as women who want to have an abortion.

And as of right now, abortion is protected by the constitution as well. So you know, theres that.

  • The analogy doesn't work.

There is one reason for having an abortion - to end the life of the baby.

There is more than one reason to obtain a gun - sport, protection, hunting, etc.

Why would you require someone purchasing a gun for sport (target shooting) to watch a movie about murder?  Because they could accidentally shoot someone?  That's like saying every woman who gets pregnant should have to go through the same hoops as you would leading up to an abortion simply because she could accidentally end her baby's life.

With that said, I have no problem with making it a little more difficult to get a gun.  It was almost too easy for me.

But to get a hunting license I had to attend a class and learn about gun safety.  For my husband to get a CCL he had to attend another class and demonstrate he could properly handle a gun, so there is that.

  • I'm uncomfortable with this argument, for some of what aw stated. You can own a gun and never kill someone, or have the intent to use it against a human. Its a bit of a logical leap.

That's really scary. (Not that it was easy for you, in particular, but anyone.) Guns terrify me. Whenever the topic comes up, especially since my daughter was born, I can't help but think about that freaking scene in the sixth sense where the kid's head is blown off and he's like "come here, I want to show you my dad's gun" or something.

    Maybe I have a problem.

As for the quote in the OP, I think it's kind of strange wording, but they are just trying to say it should be harder for people to get guns.

    Edited for clarification.

  • We at Bayer are working on breakthrough medicine that will make it possible for our aspirin (when taken in large doses) to cause spontaneous miscarriages, i.e. abortion. But don't tell the GOP that just yet.

Until that cutting edge medical advancement is realized, you can simply insert an aspirin between your legs to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. See image below for instruction.
