No YHL comments today?

I figured with the reader redesign being from Our Humble Abowed, there would have been some comments here!

Re: No YHL comments today?

  • I don't keep track of which days are double post days.

I got a thrill out of Katie Bower's sex candle, though. (not)

  • Yes, the baby making candle was funny. I was especially amused it was on his side of the bed...
  • yes, a little too much detail.  A lot too much.
  • I totally agree with the gross out KB comments--make me REALLY not want to continue reading.

I'll bite on the YHL/OurHumbleAbowed thing:

I am really surprised YHL featured OHA because I always thought OHA was trying to be very close to YHL, a competitor if you will.  Skip this if you don't want to read conspiracy theories.  But OHA did a big kitchen remodel (some claim better than YHL, and I'd have to agree) like YHL.  OHA sold their house for sale by owner like YHL.  More importantly, OHA is moving to a new house where they can do more D&R, like YHL.

OHA consistently posts in YHL's comments and includes a link to their blog--I always thought this was to increase reader traffic to the OHA blog.  And, finally, one day YHL puts up a post called "OK now you can put a cork in us" (March 12) and the next day (March 13) OHA puts up a post titled "Stick a fork in it"; both posts were about finishing kitchens.  (Yes, you can call me crazy for noticing this detail.)

My point is that OHA seems to be inspired by A LOT of things that YHL does.  OHA also has a monthly round up thing.  There is nothing wrong with this, but I was surprised that YHL featured them.

ETA:  I can completely see how OHA is living their own life and making their own decisions that has nothing to do with anyone else, but there is a lot of overlap here, even if by coincidence.

  • I was first a bit surprised to see OHA featured on YHL because they essentially are competing blogs but then I realized that with YHL's popularity, it will only increase traffic to OHA.

As much as I like KB, she really grosses me out sometimes.  I don't want to read about sex candles and mirror humping at 8:00 in the AM.

Well damn!  I wasn't going to check out the sex candle thing but now I must know what the mirror humping thing is about.  I've been avoiding her blog since that whiney post about wanting a baby so bad and trying for so long.  Uhm, yeah...

ETA:  well the humping was really boring.  I was thinking it was paired with the sex candle but no.

  • I think KB is probably totally herself in her blog posts and not trying to say what she thinks people want to hear. If my BFF told me she loved her mirror so much she wanted to hump it, I would laugh.

I don't follow YHL closely enough to notice these things, but it does seem a little odd.

I think OHA's kitchen is way better than YHL's. But I usually think the reader redesigns and house crashing posts are better than the rest of their content.

Yes, but she's not funny or clever. And worse than unfunny when she's trying hard to be, she's just nasty - look at the dead bushes/Amy Winehouse comment.

Yes  It seems like a lot of blogs these days are so worried about what kind of negative feedback they are going to get that they try to predict it and explain it beforehand, even the simplest, silliest things. It's annoying.

I laugh, so I guess it depends on your sense of humor. The Amy Winehouse comment was so long ago.  I would be in trouble if people brought up stuff I said/wrote long after I said them.  Then again, I stopped being PC awhile ago.

I agree. I told my H last night that I would make sweet sweet love to this pillow my aunt bought me when I was pregnant with DS that I saved all this time. It's huge, it wraps around me so I don't have to swap the pillow when I roll over. It's just the best thing going on in my bed right now.

So humping a mirror would most likely come out of my mouth.

Also, I started skimming (bad habit of mine, even when reading books) and I missed the candle thing.

  • I guess I don't usually read OHA. The kitchen looks fantastic though.

I was amused by the fact that they had to have spent literally ten times longer writing about spray painting that chair than they actually spent painting the chair.

This is my major complaint about their spray painting posts. I just don't think the posts need that much detail.

I did "Aww" at the last picture of "Where's, Clara?"

  • I don't think any blogs are in competition with others.  You can read more than one, just as you can shop at Wal Mart and Target.  Everyone is benefitting, so what does it matter?  let's be honest, YHL has a much bigger, more successful blog, so they're helping OHA by featuring their kitchen.

As for your conspiracy theories, it sounds like just that.  Everything you mentioned is a major decision, not like an art project or paint color selection.  Really, why would OHA remodel their kitchen BECAUSE YHL is?  Or sell their house by owner or buy a house all because people they don't even know did?  Seems far fetched.

But, OHA definitely leaves links in comments to get more traffic, but they're not the only ones doing that.  It's free advertising and YHL doesn't seem to care.  Actually, they comment on links people leave saying "thanks for sharing' or similar responses.  After seeing your comment about similar post titles, I reread the posts.  YHL's post was about their floors being done and OHA's was about their entire kitchen.  Either way, I think it was a coincidence.  And so many blogs do a monthly round up thing.  KB does it because YHL did and Thrifty Decor Chick had a monthly wrap up long before YHL started.

So many ideas are recycled and reused in the blog world, and it's not fair to say ones life decisions are based on someone else's decisions.  Maybe OHA saw an idea or decided to start monthly wrap ups because YHL did, but it's a stretch to say OHA renovated a kitchen, bought and sold a house because another blog did.

  • i don't mind stupid hump mirror humor, I mind the real deal, "these are personal things about me and my sex life" stuff.  it's weird.
