okay, this is gross but i must.

a few of my toenails have increased in thickness since i started running.  like, so much that i can't even trim them with a regular toenail clipper easily :/

i googled, but i thought i'd hit you ladies up for advice.  anyone else deal with this, and what did you do to get rid of it?

my feet are yearning for flip-flops!

Re: okay, this is gross but i must.

  • I used to be a manicurist and when my clets had thicker nail beds I would use the cuticle nippers to trim them and file the bed down.

  • One of the drawbacks to running is ugly runner toes...sorry :(  You could try getting running shoes a half size bigger-it works for some, but didn't for me.  Prepare for the possibility of losing a toenail or two, and invest in good nail polish to cover up the unsightliness.  Oh, and know there's a legion of posters here who can sulk about it right along with you :$
  • Mine did this and it turned out the top toenail was dead, and the thickness was because a new toenail grew underneath.  Not sure if it's because I have small toenail beds & keep mine trimmed short, but they never fell off as I was expecting (not until the new nail had fully grown in).
  • I would talk to a podiatrist, but it's basically what everyone else said. I liken it to dancer toes (which are super gross too due to en pointe and all that jazz.)

Pretty much this, exactly. It ain't pretty. I use purple polish to cover up the ugly.

  • see, i knew you ladies would feel my pain!

my running shoes are a size larger than my usual, i guess it's just one of those things i've got to deal with.  luckily my toenails are used to nail polish anyway :)

  • Honestly, I have not lost a toe nail yet. Hopefully, I can learn from all of you to see how I can avoid that.

Same here. One thick nail, never fell off, wear purple a lot. It was just starting to get back to normal, and then it happened again at my last marathon. Dark nail polish colors are your friends.

Mine are a size larger too...and yeah, it helps some people but apparently not us :P  I've resigned myself to the fact that my toenails will never see light colored polish again, and I'm okay with it.

  • Ditto the dark nailpolish. It works great on fugly toenails and to paint on a fake toenail when you're missing one :)

I wear a 9 in regular shoes, but wear a 10.5 or 11 in running shoes!

  • I'm so glad someone posted this! I noticed this with my toes ever since I started increasing my mileage. I've been dying for a pedicure, but have been to embarrassed to go get one! I was considering talking to a podiatrist, but if it's really only due to running and there's not much I can do about it, I'm not going to stop running, so I guess I'll have to deal with it.
