Kitchen cabinet/space help needed! Come in foxy lol!

We are out of funds but need a kitchen remodel.  I am thinking of revising our master plan to come up with an inexpensive option we could do start really soon.

We have an L shape kitchen, with a wall at the other side of the L making it essentially a U shape.  Right now they have kitchen cabinets going all around the U.  I am thinking we would just do the cabinets in the L shape and leave that other wall empty.  And then just put our nice china cabinet on that extra wall.  This would leave us with 20 feet of cabinets.  People I show it to insist we need more cabinet space but I think 20 feet is sufficient.  It's a 2000 sq foot home.  Does my idea sound adequate?  I also like the idea because putting my china cabinet will save us some of the clearance to walk which is minimal right now.  Thoughts?

  • I think that sounds like a great plan! We had a hutch in our last kitchen, and I loved the look of a different shape in the room. We had our "good" stuff in it, but it could certainly have held all our dishes with no problem.
  • Can you post pics? Are the current cabinets or salvageable?

  • Do you NEED a remodel, or WANT one? I'm sure we've gone over this already but I don't remember. Are the cabinets literally falling off the walls?

(Just ftr, I've lived with shittastic plywood cabinet doors for 5 years now. Our white sink is disgusting, the poorly installed white laminate counters with blue edge are so awful I pretend not to see them. It sucks but *it's not in the budget/timeline* to fix it yet so I wait, because why bother shelling out cash for a interim "fix"?!)

  • How is your bench space? Flat cabinets are better than corners, but losing a whole wall of benchtop is pretty drastic. Especially bench corners where the toaster and fruit bowl and coffee machine can live.
