What type of couch fabric

is good for a house with pets and children?

We really need a new couch.... Our couch is awful.

Re: What type of couch fabric

  • I have one in leather (LR), microfiber (basement FR) and some cotton duck stuff (office).

You know I live in a high traffic house. All 3 of the options have been easy care, easy clean and sturdy.

  • Leather.  Easy to clean, wears like iron and doesn't hold on to fur.
  • We got a sectional about a year ago that's chenille (I think). It's stronger (and softer) than microfiber. I wouldn't do leather, especially if your pets are large dogs (we have a 60lb lab). But it's in our most used room of the house, and my kids spill things on it, and it wipes right up.

  • We have cats and would NEVER get a leather couch again!
  • We also have chenille couches that have held up really well. Before these, we had a microfiber one and the dog actually left some nail marks (like scratches) in places.

  • Ours was microfiber and survived two infants (now 3 and 8) and 2 puppies (now 5 and 9)

We finally replaced if after 9 years.

The best was the covers were removable so any big mishaps and we would just strip all the cushions, throw them in the machine and the thing would be as good as new.

  • We have a leather blend that's wipe-clean, super easy care.  My mom swears by microfiber, she cleans hers with Resolve carpet cleaner and it looks brand new.

Our leather upholstery up well to our big dog.  However, the frame sucks, so we need a new set because the frame sags in the middle.  I'd do a lot more research on frames before I bought another sofa, and I probably wouldn't want to spend the money required to get a good frame and leather.

We can't do leather... we have four cats and they all have their claws.
  • We have this sofa which is microfiber: http://www.raymourflanigan.com/fresno-microfiber-sofa-200215968.aspx

We have a bernese mountain dog who likes to jump on it and a cat. It's easy to clean and looks good after two years.  My mom has the same fabric in dark blue and it has held up to my very messy younger sisters, a dog who jumps all over it and three cats.

  • The couches we had for 10 years were chenille and were in great shape. We replaced them with more chenille.
