Whole wheat pasta?

I am not sure what happened, but I made a pasta dish with whole wheat penne (Mueller's) and it tasted like fish!  That was before I put any sauce or anything on it. I did season the water with Kosher salt as we do with regular pasta, so, I'm not sure if that could effect the taste so much.  Once I put the sauce on, it tasted even more fishy.  We are really trying to eat healthier, but there is no way I could have eaten what I made based on the fishy taste.  I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if it varies by brands...

Re: Whole wheat pasta?

  • Yeah, that's not  normal. I've never had that brand but whole wheat pasta is basically just whole wheat and water, sometimes eggs. There's nothing fishy about it. I've had my share of good and bad whole wheat pastas, but none of them have tasted like fish. My favorite brand, by far, is Bionaturae.

  • Yikes.

We're big fans of Dreamfield here...I started eating it when I was pregnant, since I had GD and needed to be very strict with my carbs.  We still use it on a regular basis.

  • Do you ladies salt your water?  I'm wondering if that might have done it. I had whole wheat pasta in a dish a few weeks ago and it did not taste fishy either.
  • salting your water should have nothing to do with it. i always salt water for pasta and we mostly use whole wheat as well. i've never had a fishy taste. did you cook something "fishy" in that pot previously, maybe it didn't come clean enough? that's all i can think of!
  • Nope. It is solely our pasta pot.  We've never used it for anything else.  I would think it could be me and my taste buds, but DH tasted it too.  It was so bad that we ended up eating out.
  • We eat whole wheat pasta all the time and that has never happened to us, so maybe it was the brand you purchased.  We usually buy Dececco (sp?)
  • Was it strictly whole wheat pasta, or did it tout being high in Omega 3? I know Barilla Plus has added flaxseed (which I think can be a little fishy tasting) and other Ingredients that aren't in plain whole wheat pasta.
  • I had the same experience the first time I made whole wheat pasta (although it may have bank whole grain). May have been the additives like pp said - flaxseed or omega 3s. DH counts that as one of the worst dishes I've ever made. It was bad. And we love fish. I've since tried it again and it wasn't fishy. I can't remember what brand we tried first or the brand recently but know the recent good one was strictly whole wheat.
