Wanting opinions on backsplash

Trying to figure out what would look good for backsplash in my kitchen, I have black cabinets with brown trim.  My countertop is granite with mult colors its called Fire Bordeaux.  I have undercounter lighting (and above counter too) .. Also I have SS appliances, including a vent hood. But I am really wanting it to look great and I swear its like I cannot figure out what would look best, and what would be easy to clean too.  Looking for advice, thank you in advance.  Help :-)

  • On left side is where double oven goes and vent hood goes straight ahead in pic.  This reno is taking FOREVER!!!  UGH!

  • I think that classic white subway tiles would look really nice.  Or even a lighter marble subway tile.
  • white subway tile looks great with everything.  I know people think it's overdone, but it's clean and classic.
  • Are the walls staying that color?

Looking at the photo, My first thought was light marble tile... but after looking at samples of fire bordeaux online, I'm not sure. It really depends on the texture/coloring in your granite. Some of the examples I saw had very large textures, and I think the marble would be great with that, while the other stones had much tighter markings, and I'm afraid it might look to busy with the marble.

White subway tile always looks great, plus it's neutral and you can put anything else with it.

I LOVE your cabinets. I wish we could have bought new cabinets instead of just having them painted... again... (I like the way my cabinets turned out, but I don't really like painted cabinets.)

  • My cabinets are the same color, except my granite is really light.

I know that people are saying that subway tile is "over" but when I went to look at tile, that look is what I was most drawn to.

Really, the best way to get inspired it so go to a tile shop and look around.  I went back and forth between glass mosaic, and then that other linear looking tile...square patterns...etc.  When I went to look at stuff in person, I fell in love with the ceramic crackle subway tile...even though I went in thinking I was going to want natural stone as well.

  • Thank you all for you great thoughts....  My granite comes in tomorrow so I will update with a new pic and see what you 'all think .  The other walls which are painted is a tan/ brownish (forgot name) but the current 'color pictured here is drywall.. Wink  I have been looking at tile shops and I keep coming back to the linear tiles but I am wodering about too busy and I am now leaning too the look 'mentioned here, of subway tiles.   Again thank you all for taking time to read and write back to me.  Will you check back tomorrow after I post a pic of the granite?
  • In the past we went the simple route and used the same granite for a 4" backsplash.  It looks realy nice.

Next i'm going for glass tiles.  Something retangular and horizontal, either 1"x2" or 1"x~4" and is multicolored.  I'd bring a piece of granite to the tile shop and see what you think might work.  THen puchase a sample of a few of your favorites to try in your home, against the cabinets.  It'll either tie it all together or something will appear off.  I actually don't know how glass will work against granite but it looks amazong against other natural stones which we plan to use in our bathrooms.

Sorry, but I would never mix subway tile with granite.  TO me, one is cheap and the other is expensive, one is natural the other isn't, and the two just don't go.  But take that with a grain of salt coming from me.
