Scary.
But I have to give it up for the CC Company.
They called to let me know before the charge was processed/out of pending status.
I use my card pretty much over and over consistently at the same places (overstock, amazon, grocery store, Target etc.) and they noted it was a weird charge.
It was only $30.00 for some CPA exam (I'm not an accountant nor will I ever be). There was nothing else weird on my charge list. They're not entirely sure there wasn't a computer error and it posted to the wrong account or if someone actually stole it. Either way to be safe they closed my account and started over.
I do have a bit of a feeling though. I was at a conference most of the week and used my credit randomly at the hotel. H and I charged dinner and it seemed to take a long time for the waitress to come back. So much so that H commented. Makes me wonder. But I don't want to go finger pointing either because who knows. Also with the latest credit card breech...who knows.
H was all like this is why I use my checkbook..and I'm all this is why I don't. At least with a CC it's not my problem nor is my money gone.
Re: So Someone stole my credit card.
I hate writing checks b/c all of my info is right there. No thank you! I am glad you company contacted you. I was just reading that crooks start out with small charges and gradually work their way up. I would thin, though, that with a CPA exam charge, it could be easily traced.
Go Phils!!
Sorry this happened to you, total PITA. This is why I hate using my debit card as a CC. If it does get stolen, if I don't notice it right away it IS my problem initially bc the money will come out of my checking account.
This is what I was thinking. I'm assuming to take a CPA test is like a teacher licensure test and there's ID and verification to no end. Which does make me think it was just a screw up. It wasn't like an anonymous charge at Gap or something.
The same thing happened to me this month, only it was a $400 charge! AmEx flagged it immediately though and called and rejected the charge. They seem to be really good at picking up on the fraudsters.
Exactly. H and I have very different money management styles though. He pays for lots of things in cash and also with his line of work a check is pretty much required (you can't pay a cow feed bill with a VISA..lol). Me I have like $1.29 in cash at the moment. I just feel safer with a cc..at least if something happens to it is traceable or can be canceled.
Yeah my cc was fast too. It just posted this morning and they called like 10 minutes later.
I'm just glad I don't have much on autopay on my card or it'd be a total PITA.
Now I'm just thinking, "Dude...if you're going to steal my info at least have a shopping day or a trip to the bar with it. Have some fun. Don't just pay for a CPA exam."
I bet it was a mistake. I agree with PP that a registration charge for a CPA exam would probably not be what someone would use a stolen number for.
I have had weird stuff happen with my CC # before but my bank has always been great about either flagging it or quickly investigating it if I file a report. In any case, they reimburse my account right away until the investigation has been completed. I have never had an issue with not getting my money back or anything like that.
Ha yeah. And it seems like that would be pretty darn traceable to who was trying to do it. I would think that you pay when you apply to take the exam, meaning your name would be slapped all over the transaction. He probably wasn't going to pass that exam anyway if he's that bad at hiding fraudulent transactions, haha. I've had this happen one other time, and it was tons of small charges to weird companies in Europe. I think I had to flag those for them, strangely enough. European charges should definitely raise red flags on my account.
I have everything on autopay, so I'm sure I'll be getting some notices from some obscure bill soon that I haven't paid my bill. I tried to remember everything, but I'm sure I forgot something.
Safety + tons of rewards = I use only credit cards for e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.
Me too. I rarely cary cash around. I even use my credit card for <$5 charge. Love the rewards!
Ugh. DH's card number was stolen in November. $1200 worth of charges in just a few hours. Lame!!!
That is so disconcerting and annoying. Glad that it was worked out.
DH's card number was stolen last week. The bank froze the card when someone tried to charge $200 of things at a WalMart in Florida. The only thing was, NO ONE CALLED US! We found out the next day when DH tried to use his card for a few stupid purchases and it came up declined so he called and had to get issued a new card. While I am glad they froze the number, a phone call would have been nice!
The time mine was stolen it was from a hotel--as well as nearly all of my coworkers cards. It was either from the front desk or our rooms though--I never used it otherwise.
Although last week my work card was used by our travel agency accidentally but I'm pretty sure they just meant to charge it for a woman with the same name as me at my company.
