ahaha yes so true...sometimes they call it "silicone liner"
I have heard in the past that some silpats or silicone liners give off a smell/ordor...I really dont want that kind of liner for my baked goods...
I got mine from Sur la Table I think.
To be honest - I rarely use it. I use parchment instead. The silpat holds on to the smell of foods - which probably isn't a problem if you are only using it for cookies, but I used mine for garlic tuilles once and it held the garlic smell for a long time. I also feel like I can never get the silpat clean - it always feels greasy. And finally, I feel like it affects browning.

I got mine at Crate and Barrel and it works great, however it's funny that a "silpat" affecting the browning was mentioned because I made the Cook's Illustrated perfect choc chip cookies and I noticed that they were overbrowned on the edges. I've always used parchment paper before.
The silpat works great for some things, especially cutting costs on parchment paper. However, I still keep a roll of parchment paper on hand. Just like most kitchen gadgets, it's good for some things and not for others.
Yeah - that's sort of what I meant - I've had problems with overbrowning on my silpat.
