Dog and skin issues

I'm hoping someone here can help me.

Last year, one of my dogs started having skin issues. Her back and neck broke out in tons of little pimples and got pretty oily. She started scratching a lot.

I have taken her to the vet 3x about this. The first time, the vet said he could tell it was not a parasite or anything like that. He gave me instructions to bathe her in a prescription shampoo once per week. This didn't really help, so the second time I brought her back, he said it was an allergy that must be coming from her food.

Since then I have switched her food 3x and then waited about 6 weeks to determine if it had helped. Each time, her skin completely clears up for about a month and then she starts breaking out again. The vet has said to completely eliminate any beef-based foods. I have been feeding her Nutro for about 6 months and I thought this had really helped. However, today I noticed she was scratching and sure enough, her skin is breaking out again. I have another dog and and he doesn't have any skin issues.

We moved recently so I need to find a new vet down here (plan on doing this first thing in the morning) but in the meantime, has anyone ever had any experience with this? Or have any suggestions? I already searched Nutro on here and saw that is generally not a good food so I guess I will be switching again :(

Re: Dog and skin issues

  • My lab broke out in the same pimples. Our vet said to use bacitracin. You can't use neasporin because it makes them vomit if they lick it our vet said. It cleared the area up very well.

  • What foods have you tried (besides Nutro)?  Have you tried a grain-free food?  It's possible that it's an environmental reaction rather than a reaction to her food, but I would try a fish-based, grain-free food (TOTW Pacific Stream, Wellness Core Ocean, etc.).

  • Have you tried eliminating other common allergens like grains, beef, chicken & lamb? One of our dogs is allergic to all of those things...if he eats them he gets VERY itchy!
