Food Obsessed Cats!

Help! My husband and I have two cats, siblings, that are 2 years old. We adopted them when they were young, around 3 months old. Ever since we've had them they're food obsessed! It seems that lately they have gotten worse/more demanding in their whining and obnoxiousness about food. Anytime we walk in the kitchen, they come running in and are whining the whole time. Around 4 in the morning, the one cat will wake us up with meowing, scratching at random walls and our curtains because she is hungry. My husband and I are very frustrated! We feed them twice a day (morning and evening) with Wellness dry food. I've been reading that it is better to feed cats only wet food, is that accurate? If we start feeding them only wet food what is an appropriate amount to give them a day? We're currently feeding them 1/3 cup of dry food twice a day. I don't know what else to do for them to feel more 'full' and be less obnoxious! We play with them to tire them out, and they chase and play with each other as well, so they're pretty active as far as cats go. Any help is greatly appreciated - I feel like they are being rebellious teenagers and simply trying to make us mad!

Thank you!

Melissa

Re: Food Obsessed Cats!

  • I feed Sherlock only wet food and he gets 1 can a day. He still does the same stuff your cats do though... I think sometimes that's just how they are and that the weather can have something to do with it too because he's worse now as well.
  • I wish I knew of a solution for this problem. Our cat is convinced that we are starving him. He gets only wet food (EVO 4oz/day, I swear he doesnt have a metabolism because he is a very healthy weight on this amount) and will scream at me while I am preparing it. I am trying what I would with a dog and not giving it to him until he is quiet but he does not seem to be taking the hint.
  • One of our cats is food obsessed. She gets dry in the morning and wet at night (our other cat won't eat wet - we tried everything, she's just a grazer and is now free-fed dry on the counter). Our food-obsessed one, Sally, started driving us crazy by waking us up earlier and earlier to feed her. Then she would gobble it down and throw up. We got one of those timed auto-feeders (Le Bistro, I believe) and it didn't work out for us. The portions only go down to 1/4 cup (we wanted smaller) and Sally figured out how to put her paw in the chute and get more food. She would also drag it in the middle of the kitchen floor!

After reading a lot of reviews, we ordered a Super Feeder (their website is terrible, but it's on Amazon too). It's not cheap and does require a small amount of assembly (I'm legally blind and I did it, so it's not that bad). We rationalized it that it would be cheaper than dealing with a future diabetic cat. It lets you customize the amount of food and the size of the opening, and we got one with a chute cover too so our little thief can't steal more food no matter how hard she tries. With the digital timer, you can set it for different days. We have it customized to give about 1/4 cup over the course of 2 hrs and it starts at 5:30am. We have plans for one night a week, so it's set to give her drive food over a few hours on that night too. She doesn't bother us for food in the morning any more and her gobbling/vomiting is happening less frequently as well. One thing to note is that the food released is not an exact measurement (it's timer-based), but in my testing it has been close enough (about as good as DH, haha). We've been using it for about two months now and so far, so good!
