No dressers in master - yay or nay?

Hey all - I'm hoping for some advice on our master bedroom. We are building a new house and the master bedroom has two huge walk-in closets in it.  DH and I could fit all of our clothes, including things like socks/underwear, in one of them, and still have the other empty (wish we could take some space from them and give it to the other bedrooms but we didn't create the floorplan!). We are getting rid of the bedroom furniture we have now and were going to look for a new set, but given the size of the closets, we really don't even need dressers.

Do you think a master bedroom would look strange without dressers? I was thinking we could put other things in there instead (any ideas would be appreciated). It would look very empty with nothing but the bed, but I'm trying to think of alternatives. Any ideas appreciated!

Re: No dressers in master - yay or nay?

  • It would be fine in a small room but I'm guessing this is a pretty large room. You'll need some furniture to fill out the space a bit and a dresser is probably the easiest route to go. You could create a sitting area. I've also seen people put coffee bar serious into their bedrooms recently (nms though).

So I guess yay, you can do a master without a dresser with the caveat that you'll probably want some other type of furniture in the room.

And I'm seriously jealous of your closet space.

  • Are you thinking of a seating area instead? A reading nook might be nice. I am dying a little from my closet envy, BTW.

    All of this.

We don't have a dresser in our master right now, but we need one as a TV stand. (We are in the process of choosing one.)If you don't need one, I don't think they are necessary. But a reading nook would be great in a bedroom.

  • We don't have a dresser because we have 2 closets. Instead we have a couch and a wall of bookshelves. It works for us but we are both avid readers so we have a LOT of books!
  • I think it's fine, especially if you put something like an entertainment, seating or (my favorite idea) coffee/mini-bar area in instead.
  • We have two huge closets and a huge master bedroom so we needed furniture to help fill the space and we opted for some dresser/chest pieces.  You can get away with not having dressers if you plan a space that utilizes some kind of furniture (seating areas, bookcases, etc.).

When our remodel is done our master will not have any chests of drawers. We will have a bed, side tables, a seating area, and an heirloom cedar chest. All of our clothes being in the closet is going to be great since DH and I wake up at different times we won't disturb the other when getting dressed.

  • I wish we didn't have to squeeze in dressers now.  If DH would pare down his wardrobe instead of keeping snow clothes down here in the south, we might have a chance.  :-)

If we were in your position, we'd probably do what the pp mentioned and have a wall of bookcases and a sitting area with a chair or couch.  I don't think dressers are necessary for a complete look.

  • We just moved into a house with a large walk in closet with enough space to hold all of our clothes.  We didn't get new furniture yet. Right now we have our bed, two nightstands and 2 upright dressers.

My plan is to get rid of the dressers and set up a sitting area.

  • My preference would be large closets, smaller room for master and enlarge other bedrooms.  You do not need a dresser in a bedroom.  I would add a chair and lamp if you need to fill space - or a small desk.
  • We have a very similar set up with two very large walk in closets.  Our MB is really long and kind of narrow so we are doing a bed and no dressers.  I am going to have a chest under the tv (wall mounted) and then do a sitting area.  After I see how that fills up the space I might add something else if it still looks empty.

  • My BFF has a smallish MBR and uses the bedroom next as a dressing room with his/hers dressers and racks.

Her BR has a queen bed, two nice nights stands and a chair with a side table. You don't notice the missing dressers.
