What'd everyone think of this episode?
Both DH and I did a double take when Betty came on screen. She's got the housewife blues bad. I also think she's starting to miss Don and Don is starting to see Megan for as young as she really is. Especially after making those comments about if Betty died how he'd have the kids and they'd have Megan but not really a "mother" type.
I think the new copywright, William I think his name was, is going to get groomed by Roger to go against Pete but we'll see.
Also, I hate Pete Campbell. Always have and always will. He's a snake.
I'm excited for next week but I wish they would just show all the episodes back to back. This is my first time watching it "live" as we got into the show during the hiatus and were able to watch all the seasons back to back.
Re: Mad Men 4/1 *SP*
This episode was just so-so for me, probably because it had a lot of Betty. The fat makeup was really unconvincing, about as bad as Peggy's fat makeup awhile back. I was actually kind of hoping Betty would have cancer, not because I really dislike her, but because I thought it would be a really interesting storyline. Oh well.
Not sure what to think of the new copywriter.
Does anyone think Don's secretary Dawn is going to have much of a role this season? For the past few years I've thought that Mad Men was really going to get into the Civil Rights movement, but they never really have. We'll see.
It was interesting to see Don interacting with that teenager backstage at the Stones. He really seems like an old man now.
I don't think Betty had on all makeup- she just had a baby. I do think there was some special effect going but don't think they had to go over the top.
I really liked this episode too- much better than the first this season imho.
I agree Dawn may have a bigger role...I'm also excited to see what happens with the new copy writer.
This episode was just meh for me. Too much Betty but without the usual bite. Betty's best line was after she found out the tumor is benign: "It's great to get put through the ringer and come out knowing that I'm just fat."
Not a fan of Ginsburg but I'll reserve judgment until his character develops more.
I'm curious what they have in store for Dawn.
I want more Joan.

I was getting the feeling Betty was lying to everyone that it was benign but it really wasn't.
I cannot look at her and not think about the articles posted about Janurary Jones eating her own placenta.
i thought it was an interesting way to write JJ's weight in to the story line without it being a pregnancy story line. i don't think she would lie about it being benign, she seems like too much of a drama freak for that. just look how she freaked out about a nodule on her thyroid in the first place (which is not uncommon).
i was meh about the rest of the show. is it just me or do the lack of secrets and personal lives make the show a bit more....{shrug} worthy?
This episode was also kind of meh for me. But seems like the writers always throw in a few of these to set up the story for something big to happen.
So the theme was tea leaves/the future? And this was supposed to be the passing of the guard I guess? The kids at the Rolling Stones concert contrasted with Don and Harry who were totally out of place, Sally watching her mom gorge on sundaes, Ginsberg hopefully NOT taking Peggy's place but certainly his addition to the office mimics Peggy's years ago, Pete taking Roger's place, the new secretary, etc.
Overall, Betty just made me sad. She's been in a downward spiral for years. I keep hoping the writers would get her out of it, but I suppose that is the point.
Roger also makes me sad. He finally realizes he is no longer relevant and it's kind of heartbreaking to watch.

This is the first time where I actually missed Betty and Don as a couple even though they were so dysfunctional together. I really felt bad for Henry this episode as well.
The politics of the office and advertising clients are the main focus of the show. I think some of the social issues may be being set up for future storylines within the firm.
Like I think Peggy and Michael Ginsburg will actually become a couple eventually leading to the mixed religion relationship scenario of Catholic and Jewish. We met his father at the end of the episode. Seems like he lives in a similar type of set up with his family that Peggy had in the first season. I envision his father and Peggy's mother as strong heads of their families who would clash over a relationship, etc.
I also think Dawn will play a bigger role in the firm as time goes on. Maybe working with Pete to advertise to the black community. He dabbled in that a few seasons a go but now the firm may be more receptive.
Thats my take on it.
I predict a Jewish story arc. And isnt Heinz German.. I think they spoke to that yesterday. What happened?
I felt sorry for Bettys husband untl he was a di!khead to Don when he called to check on Betty. He was obviously mad at Betty for not telling him that she called Don, but that wasnt Don;s fault.
don seems nicer this season.. do we think they are setting him up for a fall? for a relapse? or does he really love Megan? maybe he will cheat on Megan with Betty?
I LOVED this episode because Betty was in it.
Henry Francis won points with me when he showed how loving he is toward Betty no matter her weight. That's a message that a lot of women need to internalize (especially my mom).
The scene that resonated with me most was when Betty was dreaming and watched her family in mourning at the breakfast table. It was brilliant and a feeling I think most women with young families have felt at one time or another.
I think the writers started to hit their stride with this eppy.
And Peggy with the new copywriter--loved it!
ITA about Roger. He's one of my favorite characters because he is the comedic foil, even if he does do dumb stuff sometimes. It makes me sad to see him be sad.
I agree with the PP about this being kind of a transitional episode. Maybe part of this theme is to start setting up for how the world outside the office is changing so drastically and that there will be dramatic repercussions inside the office somehow?
