Just an update for those who responded to my post about the $1300 estimate i got for a single panel drape to cover an oversized sliding glass door (96" from molding to floor, 76" wide)...
JC Penney custom draperies came today to do measurements, first off I was very impressed with her, she discussed a lot of options in terms of rods, hardware, traversing rods vs grommets vs rings, etc for the size of window we have. For a traversing rod with small pleats & what looks like rings at the top and a hidden cord for pulling it, it would take 18 yards of fabric for our window & the estimate was $1500...
So $1300 was not crazy apparently. But after talking to her about how difficult it would be to pull a huge curtain like that across a typical rod w/ just rings (esp b/c I am short), I think the traversing rod is the way to go, and the $1300 was just for a regular curtain w/ rings so who knows what it would be for the other!
Just figured I'd post since a lot of ppl seemed to think $1300 was outrageous. The size of the window is a big issue and the type of hardware I guess. Ugh. I am torn b/c this is what I want to do but very hard to pay that for one window, and for a treatment that you can't take with you when you leave....
Re: An update on my sliding glass door custom curtain post from 2 weeks ago
We just have regular panels for both of our sliders. I grab from the middle of the panels and pull aside. It's worked fine for us!
If you're planning on moving I wouldn't spend it but if you're going to stay for awhile and it's what you want I say go for it
No idea how much the fabric is but since i've had 2 different places give me about the same estimate, I think it is the going rate for the larger custom companies... I'm sure there are some seamstresses who could attempt it but I'm new to the area, have no idea how to find a great seamstress other than Angie's list & had a bad experience w/ poorly made stuff in our last state so I'm hesitant to do it again.
To PP it is not a matter of one or two panels (but I want one b/c our slider is in a corner & all would pull to one side), but the height of the window. You can't buy regular panels beyond 84" and our window is 96" plus the additional height up to the rod.
That is good to know re the sliding!!! Thx!
Thanks...I think they're still in pairs, not a single, which I realize is not the end of the world, just not really what I was looking for since I want to be able to pull it any width or fully across. Also almost all the long ones seem to be pocket rod curtains which in my experience do not pull easily back & forth. All their sliding glass door ones are 84", ugghhhh!!! I didn't really want grommets but I wonder if my choice will be $1500 or grommets for a much more affordable curtain.... (how do grommets look pulled all the way over to one side? That seems like maybe it wouldnt work well b/c it would be like 2+ ft of bunched up curtain?? anyone do this w/ a grommeted curtain?).... I seriously had no idea this door was going to be an issue. Or my driveway for that matter, which is so narrow & angled weirdly that we can't pull 2 cars into our garage simultaneously without having to do like a 6 point turn. But I digress. Grr....
ETA: I just saw that you did include the width, so I'll adjust for that.
I just did a really quick Google search and here's an example of a curtain for a sliding glass door that's 76 inches wide and 100 inches long. It can be ordered in a split panel or in a single panel with a return built in to the left or right side. And it's $469. Even if you went to 168 inches wide, it would only be $963. I really do think $1300 for a sliding glass door curtain is pretty astronomical.

oooh. going to look. if it comes in a color (my walls & furniture are neutral so i really need some color in the room- again, this might be driving my cost up b/c I wanted a striped fabric in browns/neutrals and red to bring in my furniture, woven blinds & throw pillows) I might have to go for that.
