French door: don't use/cover up?

Hi all -

One of the bedrooms in the new house has kind of a weird set up and I thought you guys might be able to offer some ideas.  The bedroom is to the right of the front door and has french doors there (glass paned).  It has a closet on the wall across from the french doors and then another door to the hallway on the wall to the direct left of the french doors.  (Does that make any sense???)

We want to close the french doors and not use them, as they really make that room feel like/function like a hallway.  Eventually, we may use this bedroom as a dining room, but in the mean time we want to use it as a bedroom.

Anyone cover up french doors or remove them?  Any ideas on how to cover them up so there's less chance my children will break them (3 and 2 year olds!) or some ideas on how to work around this for the short term?

Thank you so much - I googled this and came up with one post on HGTV with cardboard and duct tape.  :)

  • I'm a little confused by your description.  I assume there's another way to get to that bedroom?  If so, can you lock the french doors and put solid curtains over them for privacy?  I would probably put the curtains on the doors themselves, on the inside of the bedroom.
  • I think I'd do the curtains inside the doors too, something you can't see through.

Or is getting solid doors at least temporarily an option, you could put the french ones in your basement or garage or something until you would prefer them?

Depending on how involved you want to get: you could just change the doors out for solid doors and lock them. Cover them with curtains. Take the doors off, add some temporary framing and drywall to the opening until you're ready for them to be open again.

  • I would put curtains on the doors (with rod on top and bottom of the sheer/semi sheer panels)
  • I don't think it's meant to be a bedroom. It sounds like it was intended as an office or dining room. My mother's beach house has this room just off the foyer; it's my dad's man cave. She had sheer panels on it for a time, but that just looked stupid.
