Bathroom tub material

We are renovating our bathtub.  I'm trying to decide what type of material we should get for our bathtub.  We have a 60 year old home that we are trying to design in a modern classic with a craftsman twist.

Any recommendations or places to go for assistance.  I hven't been very succesful in trying to compare them

Re: Bathroom tub material

  • Sounds like a fun remodel!  We're doing the same thing right now (in the middle of two bathroom remodels and going with a craftsman feel where we can).

Cast iron is the most durable.  They cost more, weigh more (you'll have to look into what spacing, length, and size your floor joists are and if they can hold up a very heavy tub + water when it's filled), are cold at first but then stay warm, and are harder to install (hire out if you can).

Acrylic coated fiberglass is what most people go with though.  Cheaper brands will have much thinner fiberglass and layers of acrylic.  Avoid them and you should be OK.  Acrylic tubs are easier to scratch.  A non-slip textured bottom is good...for both slipping and keeping scratches less visible.

We ended up going with acrylic for both our master and main bathroom.  Kohler Bancroft for our tub/shower combo in the main bathroom.   And MTI Andrea as a roman tub in the master bath.

The Kohler tub is a good price and quality product.  The bottom is nice and sturdy unlike the two tub/shower fiberglass surrounds we took out of the bathrooms.  We also had ordered a Kohler Underscore roman tub for the master bathroom sight unseen and then decided we did not like the massive size and took it back.  It was even thicker/stronger/better than the Bancroft but it's also a bigger span and holds a lot of water weight.  We have seen the MTI in person and they are definitely a notch above the Kohler tubs but they also have a higher price tag.  They have a lot more options size wise so we have to go with them to fit in our space and be the squarish style we want.  We're just going for a soaker so that keeps the price down a lot.

  • Ditto the Kohler recommendation. They make a good product.
