My hair doesn't hold curl. Product recs needed

Besides hairspray what works the best for curling hair?

Thanks!

  • sometimes it's not as much about the product as the method.  have you tried any of the no heat curls?  (headband or sock bun)  I've heard that can be really great for hair that isn't curly.
  • I have pin straight hair. To make it hold a curl longer I prep it with Aveda's Be Curly serum. Sometimes I even mix it with a bit of Confixor Gel (also by Aveda) to add volume. Then I proceed styling it - hot tool, hair spray etc. This makes my hair stay curly all day, the second day it starts to fall and turns into waves. Although, like I said, my hair is pin straight so I can't expect it to ever hold a style for too long, your hair might last longer than mine.

This!! The headband method immediately came to mind, I do it all the time and love it. I usually do it over night but when I feel like my curls are falling out I just re-wrap it for an hour or so. I actually get tons of compliments when I just have it wrapped!  I haven't had luck with the sock bun but I'm a headband-curl addict :)

  • Don't use conditioner before you curl. Moisturized hair does not hold curl as well.

Old fashioned pin curls last on most people. Shampoo your hair the night before. Don't condition. Blow dry until almost dry. Take small sections and twirl around your finger. Once twirled, start winding the bottom up into a circle. When you roll it all the way to the top, put 2 bobby pins in an X to hold it in place. Move on to the next small section... continue until it's all done. Sleep on it. Your hair will be curly in the morning.

If that sounds like too much work, Babyliss hot rollers work well.

  • My hair generally holds a curl better when it's a little bit dirty, if you can get away with washing your hair every 2-3 days.
