matching white wood with dark wood

We chose this dark chocolate wood furniture for the dresser/hutch and end table in a quality brand but are planning to get an inexpensive IKEA crib for the nursery.  I have white wall decals and the walls are light brown.

I was thinking of getting a white crib to play off the white wall decals placed above the crib.  Other option is to go with a dark wood crib that is close to, but won't match exactly, the rest of the furniture.

I'm decor-challanged.  Could someone kindly steer me in the right direction??

Re: matching white wood with dark wood

  • It's totally fine to mix painted wood with stained wood.  In your case, I'd do the white crib for a couple reasons: 1) it won't look like you tried to, but couldn't, match the rest of the furniture, and 2) it will help the crib be a focal point in the room.  When everything is the same color, nothing stands out.
  • I mixed dark brown and white furniture in DS's nursery, and really liked the effect.  I think a white crib would be nice, especially with crisp brown-and-white bedding.

  • Mixing the white and dark wood tones would be more casual, matching (or near matching) tones would look a little more formal. Getting a similar but not perfect match would totally be fine, but I think white and dark wood mixes look very cute! (love dr g's nursery above!)
