Birthday Care Package

Hi there! I intro-ed myself about 8 months ago and pretty much just lurk now, but I thought I would get some ideas from you ladies. :)

So... I have done far too many care packages in the past, but this up-coming one is important. H is turning the big 3-0 and he's a bitter betty about it. It doesn't help that he will be deployed over it. I want it to be a great package. I don't want to pick on his over-the-hill status too much (obviously, I'm kidding there.. It's freakin' 30. Idk why he's so upset over it.. lol.. )  and know what kind of stuff he WANTS as well as what he likes so I have started building it.

I was wondering if you ladies sent any birthday-focused care packages and what you did? I did one on his last deployment, but since this is a decade-turner, I wanted it to be... idk "extra" special. Is that too cheesy? :P

I would love to hear any fun ideas?

Re: Birthday Care Package

  • 30 is over the hill?  Oops.

What about some sparkling cider and fancy treats?  I did that for an anniversary package.

The birthday stuff I sent was specific to his love of running.

  • How about things that remind him of his childhood?  Maybe look for DVDs of movies that came out when he was in high school, candy, a bunch of music he'd get a kick out of, maybe some notes from his family and a few friends.  If you aren't near them for hand written notes, get them to email you or send you a message on FB so you can print them out and put them in the box.  Maybe have them include a funny story from his younger days.

I wasn't too thrilled about turning 30.  I'll be 34 this year.  These have been the best years.  He'll get over it when he realizes he won't fall apart and start growing hair out his ears and nose right off the bat.

  • The one I sent H was geared around a superhero.. I can't even remember which one. I got a bunch of those Happy Birthday banners, paper plates, napkins, forks, streamers, tablecloths, etc.. I made a couple 'cake in a jar' for him and his friends over there. I lined the inside of the box with wrapping paper.. it was cute.

I also obviously sent a real gift (he wanted a new iPod), but he liked everything and the guys liked the cake.

  • In the Army, you don't let people know it's your birthday.  You get special treatment, lol.

  • I turned 30 on my last deployment to Afghanistan.  My mom sent one of my squadron-mates a care package full of decorations (banners, streamers, beads) and goodies (candy, cookies) for my birthday, and a few friends of mine surprised me by decorating my room, work area, locker, etc while I was away.   It wasn't anything SUPER-special, but it was a great way to know that my family back home was thinking of me, and enough people in my squadron found out about it that I got quite a few birthday wishes.   It broke up the monotony:-)

  • This most recent deployment I sent a box of cupcake treats (kinda like little debbie but a million times better) that are from a local company in our hometown and birthday candles.
  • Wow you ladies rock. :)

I love the idea of sending a package to someone else to decorate for me! I hope I can make that work out... What an awesome idea if I can make it work. They get moved around a lot so we'll see! *fingers crossed* :)

Yeah last deployment I made his care-birthday-package all Star Wars related (we're super nerds) but I LOVE the idea of making it childhood-related. I'll have to find out what his favorite candies and things were way back in the day. He, too, LOVES cake in a jar. He was obsessed with it last deployment. It's the little things in life, I suppose.

Yeah, he is REALLY touchy about this birthday, but I'm pretty sure when he realizes that.. uh.. nothing changed..? He'll be fine. hahaha I can make it about his childhood with a note reminding him that just because his age is changing doesn't mean he has to grow up himself.  :P

    Thank you so much!

  • Sparkling cider is brilliant. That didn't even cross my mind. :)

hahaa I threaten H with a confetti box all the time.  Luckily, the Navy (at least his squadron) doesn't care much about birthdays so it's not a big deal and I don't have to worry about him getting birthday-punched to death :P But I'm pretty sure he sloooowly opens all boxes I send him just in case it explodes with sparkly fun.

  • He wasn't deployed, but for my DH I put together an album of childhood photos of him.  In a conversation earlier in the year he'd said something about how he didn't have copies of any...so I got some from his mother and grandmother.

And ditto that once its said and done 30 isn't really a big deal.  It just messes with your head leading up to it, lol.
