Paint vent covers?

We're having our whole house professionally painted next week.  As the color consultant was walking out she asked if we wanted the vent covers painted, as well.  We said sure, but now I'm starting to reconsider.  There are 3 wall vent covers that would be visible.  Our trim is white, and the vent covers are white.  I'm afraid that the paint will chip off sooner rather than later and start to look crappy.  I'm sure the painters will do whatever they need to do to prep the covers, but I kind of feel like "why bother?"  The walls will be beige, FWIW.

 What says The Nest?

DH is for painting the covers, thinking we can always touch up whatever we need to touch up, and I'm against it, as of right now.

Re: Paint vent covers?

  • The house we bought had painted covers (vents, outlets, and light switches).  It looked AWFUL - I hated it.  Most of all it made the previous owners look lazy, imo.

I've since switched them out to white to match the trim and it looks considerably better.

  • Honestly, just have them paint them. Vents aren't that expensive. You can always repaint, or buy  new ones down the road if you don't like the look.
  • I would not.

I have never seen this look good professional or not. It looks like the painters were being lazy and the second it chips it looks horrible!

  • When my GF had her house done, they sprayed the vents to match and I LOVED how it looked.  IMO, to have them painted makes them so much less obvious than when they're contrasting white.
  • No unless they take them off, prep the surface, and paint them so they last.  Painting them in place will just make replacing them hard.
  • In the home we are buying, all the vent covers are painted.  I thought it was so weird since I have never seen this done before.  I guess it makes sense if you use really dark colors like they did since it makes the vents less noticeable.  We have to repaint almost every single room in the house when we move in and I am not going to paint the vent covers (I'll obviously get new white ones).  I figure I can always go back and paint them later if needed. So I guess my advice would be to not paint them unless you are chooing a really dark paint.

I'd be happy to post pictures of the painted vent covers in our new house if you'd like to see what it looks like.

  • I think unpainted vents looks lazy.

I mean - the wall is one color why in the world would you want some ugly metal vent popping against the paint? SMH

I have never had paint chip from a vent. Ever. I don't know what you all do to your vents.

I tend to use darker or brighter paint colors than the suite of builder-beiges. Perhaps with lighter colors you don't notice the vents but I don't need a white vent popping like art off my whitall brown walls.
