FML: Countertop update.

What a disaster!

So the carpenter crew shows up today and gets to work on my countertop. They get it all set together and find an angle where one of my corners meets doesn't match up with the other piece.

The factory tells them to sand it down. They did that. Do anymore and it'll look like hell.

Then the factory tells them to just use "lots of caulk." LOL. Right. That'll be beautiful.

Finally the factory says, "Just slide it forward a bit. Again. Right. Leave me a big gap between the wall and counter or have one my edges not even with the rest.

Ummm...idiots...I shelled out over 3K on countertops. It better be damn well perfect.

So they keep working around it and find my faucet is corroded. Whatever. Need a new one. No big deal. Still something else to add to the fire.

Then they get the edges of the rest of the counter up and find there's a wider gap than what I was told between the edge of the backsplash and the wall. I was orginally told that when they caulk the seems I could just touch up paint with a thin brush and it'd be fine.

Ummm....idiots....I have like a 3 inch gap.

Meanwhile the lumberyard I bought it from is playing innocent. Hs brother works there and he called to see how it was going and I gave him an ear full..lol. He also spoke up for me. I need to do it myself though. Just to be clear. ;)

Needless to say I'm p*ssed. So is my carpenter crew which is amazing and b*tched on my behalf. I'm expecting the factory rep any second.

The carpentry crew said I should ask for a discount, a free faucet and a decent looking backsplash since you know..they already screwed up 3 times.

So now my kitchen is in my LR for the time being and I have no water in my kitchen.

I better be well rewarded. ;)

On a fun note though...the Nest would love my carpenter crew....

It's a guy and his 3 DAUGHTERS. :) It's fun and they do a great work. As much as I want this done...at least they didn't agree to half a$$ it.

What is currently set up looks great though! Love it.

Re: FML: Countertop update.

  • OMG, I am livid for you.

I hope you get a discount and a faucet and the best looking countertops ever.

LOL. Even my normally calm, "it'll be okay, it's no big deal. this always happens with a project" H is livid for me.

I don't usually cry about things like this in life..but I cried today. Cube was looking at me like "WTF Mom. I'm the one that needs a diaper change, a bottle and a nap. Not you."

  • Holy crap!  I'd cry too.  I'd probably ask for a full refund by that point and go somewhere else (but I know you don't have that option, living in the sticks and all Stick out tongue)  I hope you get 50% off.  Unacceptable IMO.

Yeah. I don't have a lot of options. And what's not to say if I haul off to Lowe's or somewhere it'll be better.

There will be war though...guaranteed. :)

  • Nooooo!!!!  This is seriously ridiculous.  I hope you get at LEAST a 20% discount and lots of extras, as well as perfectly made countertops.

  • No way! That is insane!

They better give you a steep discount. So do you have some pieces installed and not others?

  • We may be getting somewhere:

They've been out here trying to figure out what to do.

The lumberyard man says, "For your trouble I'll throw in the spackle and a bag of sand to fix the back."

I said, "Great. Total value on that $45.00 on a 4K bill. That's ridiculous. I know it's not the lumberyard's fault but a factor issue but it's four months and 5 issues. I'm glad you're trying to make it right."

So lumberyard man caves and says, "You're right. I'll see what else I can do." Then turns to factory man.

Factory man says, "Well I know you had a lot of problems. But you got your countertop in the end. These babies are expensive I don't think I can do much."

Enter Contractor who says, "Idiot. The girl has been waiting for months. And this screw up is wasting my time today. Don't tell her you can't do anything for her. I know you can. There's like a 400% markup on countertops. You're just taking it back to resell anyways."

So Factory man says, "Here's the manager's phone number."

So I call him. They'll be getting back to me. Within the hour.

If not. There'll be more whining. :)

    Stay tuned...lol.

Correct! The piece the sink is on that joins the bar/island/peninsual piece is what doesn't line up. So they have to take my sink away for the night. Yay! No running water for me. PBJ for dinner it is!

  • Ugh I'm so frustrated for you. Being the handy one in my household I am loving that your carpenter team includes his three daughters. I can't tell you how many people hear about the work in our home and say wow your husband must be so handy! Hmph. Go girls :)
  • Oooo!  The suspense!

I know. This is also why I laugh when I read blogs and they're all like, "I remodeled my kitchen in 4 easy steps and it only took a day!"

LOL. RIIIGGGGHHHHTT People. I was only getting new counters which was supposed to be a 4 hour unscrew, rescrew job and we are 8 hours and probably 3 days later.

Apparently I'm the only thing getting screwed at the moment!

    ;)

  • Unbelievable. I would be fuming!!!

  • Coming from a customer service professional. We put in a modest 100% markup on ALL of our products. Why? So that if we *** it up, we can afford to say "Absolutely we are so sorry that is completely our fault, we are Next Daying  you the correct part and some extra M&M's.  Is there anything else I can do for you?" Yes, we send a full size bag of M&M's (peanut on request) to every. single. customer. Even if your order was under $5, its the principle.

I understand that some of the issues here were shipping/handling issues that the factory can not control (much).  But 4 months is a ridiculous amount of time. Once they realized that they had a customer that was already sitting at 2x's the average leadtime, they should have pushed your order up front and expedited it.  Customer satisfaction at the end of a bad experience is the best marketing you can get.  Someone that says "well this happened, and it really sucked, but I'm really happy with xyz" is great.

I would call and lay into them.  If you can get Cube to belt out a bloody murder scream 1/2 way through even better, then tell them that your daughter is crying because there is a stove in her playroom and you can't get to the microwave to warm up her dinner.

    LOL. This is hilarious!

The manager is being a bit of a jerk right now but he contractor knows him and knows he's ridiculous so he said, "I'll take care of this. You'll have your counters and a discount in the morning."

He appparentl buys tons from this guy and threatened to never purchase again. Some people just have that pull. ;)

  • I think this is the point where you say "take it away and give me my money back." Ridiculous.

  • WTF?  What ever happened to doing a quality job?  I just don't get this - my husband is a general contractor and he is really hard to please sometimes.  But I am glad he is like that - when you pay 3k for something, it better be RIGHT!

LOL at the crew, that is pretty funny.

I wish I could. But I'm counterless and my kitchen is just a disaster at the moment. I'm so close to the end by this point even with the drama, that I can't start over. I don't have the time or energy for that.

Yeah. It's not my contractor that's the issue. He's actually really great and the fussy one. He showed me what was wrong and it was glaringly obvious. I feel like others would have just slapped it up and left the edging a bit off, praying I wouldn't notice. (Which in all honesty..I probabl wouldn't have).

It's the factory rep that is being all just slap it together!
