Footboard on bed - like or no?

Hi there - first time poster on the Nest, occasional lurker :)

I'm getting a new mattress this week which I am so excited for - a CA king because my DH is very tall.  We currently have a queen so I need a new bed or headboard.  I really want an upholstered headboard but DH does not like them, unfortunately.  I showed him the picture below as another option and he said he likes it which is great!  I have never had a bed with a footboard though, not to mention one that is this tall.  For any of you who've had experience with them, do you like them or do they get in the way?  I was also wondering what you do with your duvet/comforter at the footboard.  Is there normally enough room to tuck it in the end or does it bunch up?

Thanks!

Re: Footboard on bed - like or no?

  • My DH is also tall and hates beds with a footboard that is higher than the mattress.  He likes to stretch out and doesn't like the confines.  Our bed has a footboard, but it is lower than the mattress.

  • I prefer a footboard so that everything doesn't slide off the end in the middle of the night. but we're also not tall people.
  • I like having a footboard. But we're not tall people (H is 6-0) and we have a cal king bed, so our feet do not go to the end of the bed. We just tuck the bedding around the foot of the mattress. No problems with bunching up.

  • We have a foot board that doesn't get in the way at all, and our duvet just tucks right down in front of it.

  • We don't have, and probably will never have, a footboard. While I am short, FI is tall and when we do sleep in beds with a footboard, will usually wake up cursing because he kicked it. I do end up scooting down in the bed until my feet hang over the edge, so no bueno for us.

  • I don't like them.  I like to sit on the sides/end of the bed and I feel like footboards get in the way.  I also think tall ones like the picture make small rooms feel smaller.  It is a gorgeous bed though if you have a large room.
  • We have one, I love it. It's a little bit above the end of the bed, but only like, an inch. A big part depends on your mattress. Anyway, I feel it's a little less dorm-y.
  • I like having a footboard, so the blankets don't slide off the bed. My H is tall its never been a problem.

  • I like the way that bed looks.  I used to have a footboard on our bed, and the duvet and sheets tucked in just fine.  However, that being said, I recently got a new mattress and do not have a footboard anymore.  I really prefer not having a footboard now that I don't have one; my room looks bigger without it.

This, and beds are typically built so that there's room for blankets etc. between the mattress and the footboard.

    Ditto all of this.
