Question for Teachers

I'm considering moving to Charleston next year.  Does the city have one elementary district or are there multiple districts?  If there are multiple districts, are there any I should steer clear of?

Re: Question for Teachers

  • Not sure what your certified in, so I'll give you some general info based on my experiences.  SC school districts are broken down by counties.  In the Charleston vicinity there's Charleston County, Berkeley County, Dorchester District 2.  I worked at West Ashley High, which is part of Charleston County, and hated it.  I have a friend who works at Goodwin Elem. in N. Chas, and it's a pretty tough school.  If you go for Charleston County, the better schools will be in the Mt. Pleasant area.  Some people are under the impression that West Ashley schools would be pretty good, but that's not the case.  There has been a big increase in gang activity in that area, among other problems.  I worked in two schools in Berkeley County - Berkeley Middle and Berkeley High.  The middle school was rough, but I absolutely loved the high school.  I have friends who work in Goose Creek and Macedonia and love them too.  There's a great arts magnet elementary in Berkeley in Goose Creek.  You could also try Dorchester 2.  I've heard good things about that district.

Hope that helped a little. If you have more specific questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them. :)
