GAH! My OWS season schedule is being shot all to crap! (A rambly sort of vent)

Last year in October I decided which OWS races I wanted to do this year.  I picked several based on destination and several based on location near me ... and axed several due to unrealistic race cost.

Well, out of the 3 "destination" races I picked for this year, 2 aren't working out schedule wise.  I was going to do an Alcatraz swim in May, but the race got rescheduled and now it's on memorial day.  Which means that I will have to pay the high race fee (understandable based on race logistics) but also will have to get a hotel.  In SF proper.  On memorial day weekend.  Ummmm, SO not affordable.  We're talking $500+ (most likely) just to swim for 30-40 minutes in freezing cold water.  So not happening.

THEN, I've been looking forward to Slam the Dam in Lake Mead since last year when it sold out before I registered (DOH!).  But now my cousin, who I haven't seen in 15+ years, is getting married.  The weekend prior to the race.  Which is fine, but my parents are driving out for the wedding from OH and are then going to come and visit after the wedding.  So that means they'll get here 2-3 days prior to when H and I would need to leave to drive or fly down to Vegas.  So yeah.  That's not happening anymore either.

All I've got left is the Great Salt Lake in June.  But you know, with any luck, I'll manage to hurt myself or something between now and then and have to miss that too.  Grrrrrr.

  • I feel you.

I ran my first 1/2 last year, and made a goal of running a 1/2 every year until I turn 40. (in 3 years, yikes!).  When I am 40, my goal is to run my first full.

I live 4 hours away from two major 1/2 marathons, one happens on Father's Day the other in September.  I thought I was good this year as I should be able to do 1 out of the 2.

Nope, DH and I and our DD are involved in 2 weddings this year, and they both just happen to coincide with the weddings, which are in totally different places then the marathons.  I was very frustrated at first, then I realized just because I can't run a registered marathon doesn't mean I can't run a 1/2 of my own.

I am training as I did last year with the Hal Higdon 1/2 and will be running a 1/2 with a friend, that we will map out.   I would way rather run an organized one, but since that isn't possible I feel this is the best alternative.
