we have a horribly ugly radiator right when you walk in our side door. It's been driving me nuts for 2 years and I'm finally ready to have a custom cover made. The quote is $325 and it still isn't going to look all that great. THe cover is made of steel. We have ones upstairs with wood tops that I much prefer the look of, but the guy said those are not "up to code" (although he admitted that they're not going to cause an actual fire - just that it's not ok to make them that way anymore - but we're not complete idiots for continuing to use them)
anyway, all this to ask, does anyone have radiator covers they can PIP? and have you had to shell out an arm and a leg for them? I feel like it's a big rip off. If I could get the wood one, I'm be more inclined to bite teh bullet b/c I prefer how they look. But then again, anything is better than staring at my radiator.
Re: radiator covers?
We had them in our old house. I think we had something like10 of them and none were covered except one in the livingroom. I had priced our covers and couldn't believe how crazy expensive they were. I finally got my dad to cut me a bunch of wood and I made some to match the one we already had. Not the prettiest but by far better than what we had.
Here's not a great pic of the cover on the right but you get the idea.
And can I share that we moved and now have forced hot air and I miss the radiators! I miss warming my pjs on them, towels, drying wet gloves etc. I wish we had just one in an inconspicuous spot!
