Need some support....

I'm not (yet) a military nestie, but I need some support from some.  My husband of 3 years is considering going into the Air Force.  We have a 20 month year old son and are currently renting my in-law's apartment.  I guess I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or anything on how I can better support him/keep the family off his back/keep myself together/ etc.  Any and all advice appreciated (even if its telling me to get over myself!!!)

Re: Need some support....

  • You can better support him by being there for him during the struggles that are military training.

Keep family off his back by reminding them of the sacrifices he is making and why he is making them.

Keep yourself together by spending what time you can with him, and then working on the things you are interested in while he is gone.

These are all generic answers but your questions are also generic.  Let us know if we can help you in a more specific way.  Check out the military FAQ link in TX's sig, she'll be in here soon enough.

  • 1.  Get your tail end in to see the recruiter with him.  They will help ease some of your fears.

    2. Go see all the recruiters, not just the AF.  I was convinced the AF was the place for me.  Five min into my meeting with the Army recruiter and I knew I was home.

    3. Be prepared for it to take a while. They are reducing forces right now.  It is a lot harder to get in right now and they are being really picky about who they take.

    4. Tell nay sayers to bite it.  This is not their choice.  They are welcome to give opinions but not be jackasses about it.

    5. There is a button in my siggy and several others that will link you to our FAQ page.  There is a ton of info there.  Also, lurk here.  We answer questions and post about our every day lives pretty often.  You'll get a feel of what military life is typically like.  Keep in mind, we all have our own expiriences and they all vary from person to person.

  • Everyone else has given you great advice.

Just one more thing, I would encourage you to get a new screen name. (You will have to sign up with a new email) I don't know if it's your real name, but you can never be too careful out here on the internet.

  • I agree the advice PP have given you is pretty solid.

I'd like to add that one thing that could help you to feel better and to show support is simply talking to him. Asking him what his thought process is for choosing the military path and why he likes the air force.  But be aware of how you come across maybe just say in a loving tone "I was just curious...." It shows your interest and helps answer some questions you might have. Plus later on if he decides to join by you know what he wants to accomplish you can better support him then too.

    good luck

  • Thank you for all of the advice -- this is something completely new to me and I really appreciate everything you have told me -- I will definitely be sure to check out those links!

I know my questions are pretty generic, but I'm not even really sure what to ask, that's kinda where I'm at....I'm not even really sure where to start!  Thanks for the help and I definitely will be lurking around to see what other questions and answers there are! :) I really appreciate all of the answers!!!
