I got my new bedding today:
Photographing this room is impossible! In person the bedding is less washed out, more like the shams appear here.
I like the bedding (and definitely like the quality, which is excellect), but it's not coming together for me. I tried a pattern to liven it up a little over the plain cream spread I had before. Maybe because it's too light against the really dark rug? Or maybe because the walls are the same color? I tried some brown and green throw pillows on the bed, but it was just too much dark, solid color on the light bed, so I think I need some light patterned throw pillows, but I'm not sure. I also think we need something above the bed, but we're in earthquake territory, so I can't think of anything that would work outside of decals, which I don't really like. I still haven't tackled the solid, boring curtains yet like you guys suggested several months ago, but my seamstress mom might be able to help me this summer when she visits.
Whatever we do with the rest of it, I'm so happy that we finally have a down comforter big enough for both of us and down pillows. I think I'm in for some amazing sleep tonight!

Re: New bedding PIP
(I know this thread is about the bedding, but can I just say how much I love your bed? That's exactly what I'm looking for! Love it.)
On the bedding, personally I really like it. I actually think that the lighter color plays nicely against the rug. I think you hit the nail on the head about the curtains...adding a darker color there would contrast nicely against the creamy bedding and walls. And maybe add a few darker colored accent pillows on the bed?
ETA: Just read what you said about the dark throw pillows...maybe try adding pillows with a texture instead?
Pretty! Where is it from?
As for over your bed, how about using Hercules Hooks and a lightweight picture (maybe just a stretched canvas) with a wire hanger to go on the hook? Granted I have never been in an earthquake but I think because the wire is hooked on and the hook goes all the way into the wall and anchors, it might not be as dangerous as just hanging on a nail.
The heavy dark rug is throwing me off too. I love that bedding. I think some pretty, darker curtains and maybe some textured pillows (you know what I mean?) would make it look great.
Not sure about earthquake zone safe wall stuff though lol. Good luck with that!

Thanks for all the suggestions. The curtains are interlined and DH isn't going to let me replace them totally since I bought them less than a year ago, but I'm hoping maybe my mom can add some trim to them or even sew a completely new panel onto the front of them? I dunno. I'm not sure what you call textured pillows, but I'm thinking ruffles or something? Maybe chenille?
The bed is made from salvaged fir from our neighbor's garage tear-down using the Ana White farmhouse bed plan
Not the easiest project, but really the hardest part was the lumber prep and the hand-rubbed lacquer finish. With new dimension lumber and painted like the plan calls for, I don't think it would be bad.
Bedding is from The Company Store.
Hm I really love the bedding w your bed and I think the rug an wall color are throwin me off. I think you need a lighter wall color. And a different rug. But it looks good as is I think too those 2 things might just really put it together for you.
Dh and his dad built DS that farmhouse bed and it took a weekend inc the stain and poly but his dad is super handy. It's unlike anything I've seen in stores in my price range!

I think I agree. However, this weekend I went from Behr Teepee Brown (a pretty dark taupe) to Antique White (much lighter). If I propose painting again within a week, DH will flip out completely. He's not amenable to change of any sort. Thus me being stuck with the curtains. I only told him about the new bedding after I purchased it, haha.
I really like it! I like it all actually. I would add two solid colored pillows that match the color of the design in the bedding and one fun accent pillow with pattern and maybe some of the colors that are in the rug.
I don't love in an earthquake zone but I would think if you find something you really love and won't be changing out for a long, long time you could just screw through the front of it on all four corners and hide them with paint. A framed piece of art, a stretched canvas, some carved wood art, etc. could all work there. For some reason one of the first things I thought of was that wooden cut out art that crate and barrel carried years ago. Do you know what I'm talking about? It was basically a bunch of boards biscuit jointed together and a leaf/vine motif cut out of it to create a negative shape. Then there was a small wooden frame around the whole thing. Something like that could be screwed right to the wall and the screw head hidden with wood putty.
Like these. Some of them are definitely better than others, but they add some depth.

Ha, I think this one caught something. Thanks for the link, I'll ponder a bit.
Fox, I had fleetingly thought about screwing something directly into the wall, but hadn't really gotten as far as figuring how to make it not look like crap. Thanks for the suggestions. And I hate that I went to the trouble of putting up all my picture rails only to screw something in
I guess if it's just in one place that's OK. I do have stuff hanging from the rail over the guest bed, but it's light and who cares about guests anywyay :P
Oh god. That one is definitely... something different. I love the ones that look like little petals. I know that PB (Or C&B, can't remember which) had a felt pillow cover that had little felt circles sewn onto it. Different sizes but all the same colors, some layered. That sort of thing is more like it lol.
