What if they re-made Gone with the Wind.

Who would they cast as Scarlett and Rhett?

Re: What if they re-made Gone with the Wind.

  • Blasphemy.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  • That's hard!  I think maybe Mila Kunis could pull off Scarlett...my first thought was Natalie Portman, but I don't know if she could pull off the brittle/bitchy/selfish aspects of that character.  I've never seen her play a bad guy (never saw Closer or Black Swan).

Rhett is hard.  I can't think of many younger actors with that kind of charisma.  George Clooney could have done it, but he's basically channeling Clark Gable some times.  It would be casting way against physical type, but I can see Alexander Skaarsgard (sp?) pulling off that combination of smoldering and mischievous.

    Yes

ESPECIALLY in today's Hollywood.  C'mon, even Hollywood has said they have nothing better than a silent French film...

Also agree! They had such a difficult time finding the right Scarlett and Rhett the first time around, can't imagine anyone coming close to Leigh & Gable.

I know I would not be happy if they ever did a remake of GWTW.

  • I hate when they remake movies.  This is definitely a movie that stands the test of time and shouldn't be touched.

  • I agree with the pp that if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Plus, the majority of actors today can't hold a candle to the originals. BUT... to humor you... If it was to be redone, here's who I would cast:

    Rhett: Robert Downey Jr.

Scarlett: Olivia Wilde or Scarlett Johanssen. Both are seductive and have the b!tch look down.. Although Scarlett playing Scarlett would be funny given.....

Ashley: Ryan Reynolds. He has the desirability factor and innocence about him.

Melanie: Natalie Portman. Love her. She has the sweet-natured/I-want-to-hate-her-but-can't look...

    Mamie: Octavia Spencer

I agree.  Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable's performances can't be replicated.  I don't want to see anybody in Olivia De Havilland's part, either.

Just look at what happened when they tried Scarlett with Val Kilmer's ex-wife, Joanne.  Arf.

Vivien Leigh was so brilliant in that role.  Have you seen the documentary where they showed screen tests from various stars?  Paulette Goddard was great and could've done well in the role, but it wouldn't have been the same.  Lana Turner was downright horrible.

    Sorry for the digression,

I agree with PP that it should never be remade. I can't really think of anyone today who could fill the shoes of Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in those roles.  As much as I loved Hattie McDaniel as Mammy, though, I think Octavia Spencer would be a fantastic choice to play Mammy.
