Digging

Any  advice as to how to make our pups stop digging? Weve tried putting poop in the holes they dig as suggested by trainers and online but that doesnt stop them they dig else where. It probably doesnt help that we have a weiner dog and a beagle/doxie mix. Both breeds are diggers.Help!

Re: Digging

  • Your best bet is to closely supervise them outside. Redirect until they get it. Occupy them better things like a ball game or other toy.

  • Ditto PP about closely supervising and redirecting.  I know some people who have had luck by redirecting their pups to a sandbox (that way they can still fulfill the digging instinct but only in an appropriate place).  I would also make sure they are getting enough exercise and mental stimulation - they might be bored and have excess energy to burn.

  • Somebody the other day posted about a citronella collar? Having never heard of them before, I googled, and you can also get remote controlled once to deter bad behavior such as digging.

I know nothing about them, their safety, or if they're frowned upon around here - my apologies if they are.

I like the sand box idea, and if your vigilant and supervise/correct your pups all the time until they get it - it just might work.

  • I've never tried the citronella collars & didn't know they come on a remote, so take this FWIW. I would imagine if you are watching closely enough to trigger the remote, you could just as easily verbally correct your dog. It would be far less expensive. And from what I understand, those collars don't last very long.
I don't know about your dogs, but mine need more than a couple reminders to stop doing something.
    Just food for thought.
