Acana Grain-Free Formulas?

At the end of January we ended up adopting a second dog, Alice, a Siberian husky. Our eight-year-old picked her out at a local Humane Society. She came home very skinny and with roundworms. We've cleared up the worms and are working on getting her up to at least 40 pounds. After the first month she'd only gained two pounds, so our vet suggested upping her kibble amount -- she's now getting 3 cups of TOTW. Following is a poo discussion, sorry.

Unfortunately, even with some digestive enzymes, she still hasn't had a really good poo, and seems to have too many during the day. I think the 3 cups of kibble is just too much (she does much better poo-wise around 2 to 2.25 cups of TOTW). I've been looking around at the other grain-free kibbles that might pack more calories and nutrients in less kibble, and I think we might try Acana.

Does anyone have a suggestion for which formula to try out first? Of the grain-free ones, is there one that is particularly easier on the tummy? Thanks!

Here's a couple of pictures of Alice for you as well:

Re: Acana Grain-Free Formulas?

  • I *think* all Acana foods are GF.  We fed the cat food for a while and loved it.

  • We did a couple rounds of Acana, but we got some really vile gas from several of our pooches and they just didn't do well on it overall..left in bowls, gas etc.

We have always been Fromm feeders but shake things up for them every now and then.

We are currently feeding a mix of Fromm Adult Gold and/or Fromm Four star line which is grain free

  • I suggest their Pacifica line.  It's fish-based so if your dog has any sensitivities to beef, chicken, etc. they should be good with fish.

  • We feed Acana Pacifica (we do supplement with some wet food) - the dogs love it but they do poop a lot.
  • Thank you for the suggestions! We'll tread carefully and start with the Pacifica formula. Hopefully a slow switch and continuing the digestive enzymes will help with any gas issues that may arise.

I figure that if we can feed less and help her gain weight, once she's filled out some, we may be able to cut back a tiny bit on the kibble amount as well. Between TOTW and Acana, she'll be getting about a half-cup less on Acana and still have the same amount of calories she's getting now on TOTW.

  • We switched from Orijen to Acana Pacifica when we were looking for a fish formula, plus it was a little less expensive. It's been 6-8 months and we've been happy.

Awesome! So far, so good with us. I haven't noticed any super good changes in her poo yet, but we're also not even up to half Acana/half TOTW yet. She has been way more spunky lately, but that may be all the trips to the dogpark and doggie daycare with the good weather we're having.
