I know, I'm bitching about work a lot lately. But it's to keep from killing someone here in my office.
We've been doing interviews for our new sales rep position, and gotten it down to two women. One is bubbly and good at sales (agressive) and has a background in our industry, the other is more subdued, hasn't done sales at all, let alone in our industry.
My co-worker and I both did second interviews with both women, and both of us came out after the first one and said, "I LOVE HER! She's perfect for the job!" The office manager says, "Eh, I'm not sure. Something's just not sitting right with me about her. Not sure what it is, I just don't like her." We both were just underwhelmed with the second girl, and both thought that our company was going to eat her alive, since she has zero background and seems kind of mousy. You can't be like that here. You have to be a strong and cheerful agressive salesman.
So she hired the second girl. Which is whatever for her, as she's not the one who's going to have to train her and work with her closely and supervise her on a daily basis. We are!
WTF.
I'm sure we'll be doing this hiring thing again within 6 months, and she probably won't listen to us then, either. Oh, well. Fingers crossed, I'll be gone by then.

Re: Why do we bother?
Ugh I know how you feel. At my job we have several Project Managers and I assist them all. A few years ago my mom (family business, she's the president) decided to hire someone else to assist certain project managers while I would help the other ones. We had it narrowed down to two girls, and of COURSE she picks the one that I didn't like. Even though I was the one who had to work with her. My mom isn't even here half the time.
I hated her, she sucked, luckily she only lasted a few months. Now we are talking about hiring someone again since I'm going back to school, this time I told her I have to approve of them since I'm the one working with them haha. Luckily she realizes that she isn't the best at hiring since she pays too much attention to their resumes, and not enough to the actual PERSON. So she won't really be involved in hiring the next time around. YAY. Too bad you can't tell your boss she sucks at hiring lol that's one of the few advantages to a family business.
Maybe the office manager feels threatened by the first girl? I see that happening in the office a lot that the candidate with awesome qualities is rejected out of fear that they may make an employee feel competive.
This is such a bummer, I feel your pain. Training one that is not as assertive can be difficult and time consuming.
